eight days in Havana

A Slide Presentation & Talk by Juan Alonso-Rodriguez Juan's mother passed away when he was six, and he left his family a month before his tenth birthday to come to the US. After a 45-year absence, in September 2011 he returned to his birthplace: Havana, Cuba. This was an extremely personal journey back to revisit his old home and rediscover family he had left behind as well as those he had not yet met.

At the Columbia City Gallery, Thursday, Sept 20, 6:30 - 8pm. Free and open to the public.

Music for Everyone classes offer musical activities that are playful, interactive and educational. Using songs, storybooks, puppets, games, percussion instruments and folk dances, early childhood music teacher Jana Vitols disguises music education in a costume of play. She shares her enthusiasm for music, accompanying classes on violin, banjo and guitar.

2-5 year olds and their parent/caregiver are welcome to join the upcoming music series that starts, Wednesday March 27 @ The Lakewood/Seward Park Community Club! Wed & Th 10 & 11am classes currently have a few openings.

Hawthorne Elementary's library reimagination campaign

September 12th – October 12th, goal: to raise $10,000

Two-and-a half times more Hawthorne students passed the State Reading Test in 2011 than in 2010! To keep our scores high and our students motivated, our library is in dire need of new books (high-interest fiction books and updated non-fiction books) and technological presentation equipment.

Please help us bring our library to the 21st century
