Columbia City ArtWalk -- Bohemian BackstreetsLast month, Community Arts Create kicked off the first Columbia City ArtWalk, Bohemian Backstreets. There were art vendors of all kinds, youth marimba groups and steel pan groups, a performance dance group, a puppet performance, specialty ice-cream by Chef Allyss Dillon, art activities by non-profit Social HeARTistry Educators, and a community art project with CleanScapes trashcans. With activities that anyone can enjoy, young or old, and a variety of art to soak up, Bohemian Backstreets is a fun summer event that everyone can attend. Next month's ArtWalk is June 16 — it will be event better with more artists, performers, and art activities.

Columbia City Community Chorus spring concertIn the Garden of Belonging: The multi-generational Columbia City Community Chorus, led by Kathleen Tracy, performs music celebrating nature and community in this benefit for the Just Garden Project, a local organization "building and celebrating a thriving, local, just food system for all" by constructing free and subsidized gardens for low income residents of King County. Valley Vibes Jazz series premiereThe Valley Vibes Jazz Concert and Conversation Series opens Friday, June 10, 7pm, with the Marc Seales Group and the Seattle JazzED Intermediate Ensemble at the Rainier Valley Cultural Center (RVCC), 3515 S. Alaska Street, Columbia City. Admission is free or by donation. For two decades, in-demand pianist, composer, and educator (University of Washington) Marc Seales has served as a mentor to young talent. He is a leading jazz figure in the Northwest and has toured and performed with many jazz greats, including Don Lanphere, Joe Henderson, Art Pepper, and Bobby Hutcherson. Seales performs June 10 at RVCC in his sextet ensemble, which includes bassist Paul Gabrielson, drummer Steve Korn, and percussionist Lary Barilleau.

Young Playwrights FestivalJoin us on Wed, June 8 at 3:30 pm and hear professional actors dramatize new plays from South Shore School and Cleveland High School students at the Rainier Valley Cultural Center, 3515 S Alaska St. The 2011 Young Playwrights Festival features professional actors performing the best student plays chosen from spring classes at Cleveland High School and South Shore School. The plays tackle some of the toughest topics imaginable, in ways that are brutal, funny, moving and smart. A question and answer session with the featured student playwrights follows the performance.
