your Wikli-fix: Renewed

This week might be called midsummer, but it feels like a new beginning. The fickle sun thinks maybe we should hook up again, and the days seem boundless. After all, school's out, and we're reopening theaters, renewing cultural centers, old homes come back to visit, markets recreate themselves, and cinemas live to fight another day. The Wikli's got a whole new perspective.

Meet local author Peter Bacho

Saturday, June 26, 2010, 3 - 4 p.m. at the Columbia Library, 4721 Rainier Ave S.

Peter Bacho, award-winning Filipino-American author, reads from his first young adult novel, "Leaving Yesler."

"Leaving Yesler" encounters seventeen year-old Bobby Vincente in the wake of his older brother's military death; faced with the challenge of caring for his aging father, this young man from urban Seattle's housing projects is forced to take control of his life and identity as he traverses a period of life-altering change marked by new interests, new challenges, and ultimately, new life.

This program is presented in partnership with The Elliott Bay Book Co. Books will be available for purchase and signing.

art-making at Full Tilt

I'm spreading the word about a wonderful drop-in art making opportunity. Every Saturday, from 12 - 2ish the Full Tilt ice cream shop in Columbia City hosts The Makery. This amazing roving studio has everything you and your kids need for creative inspiration.

This month the focus is on Joseph Cornell and making boxes filled with found objects. They have wonderful papers, vintage buttons, shells, fabric, and many little things that are of mysterious origin.

City shuts down the Cinema

Ouch — When Paul Doyle expanded the Cinema, I'd wondered about permits… Here's Paul's latest message (Thursday, June 17):

The Cinema is Closing

Unless You Send an E-Mail

The Cinema's Last Stand

Yesterday the City declared war on our little cinema. Out of the blue, they shut us down, saying the building was unsafe. I've never felt unsafe here myself. How about you?

Connor Desai rocks with ice cream

Connor Desai's official CD release show happened last week at ToST in Fremont, and she's following up with an all ages jam session at Full Tilt Ice Cream (5041 Rainier Ave S) on Sunday, June 27 at 6pm.

"I can't think of a better location for a kid-friendly show then a combination ice cream shop and arcade. When I told my daughter about the venue she just went nuts. I even bought a bunch of inflatable mics and guitars for the show because I want all the kids to be able to rock out with me."
