Meet local author Peter BachoSaturday, June 26, 2010, 3 - 4 p.m. at the Columbia Library, 4721 Rainier Ave S. Peter Bacho, award-winning Filipino-American author, reads from his first young adult novel, "Leaving Yesler." "Leaving Yesler" encounters seventeen year-old Bobby Vincente in the wake of his older brother's military death; faced with the challenge of caring for his aging father, this young man from urban Seattle's housing projects is forced to take control of his life and identity as he traverses a period of life-altering change marked by new interests, new challenges, and ultimately, new life. This program is presented in partnership with The Elliott Bay Book Co. Books will be available for purchase and signing.

Rodney the Shark at the Columbia LibraryTuesday, June 29th 2010, 1 – 2 pm Rodney is a shark who is afraid of everything. Even his own shadow! His friends try to teach him some courage, with no success. But when another shark begins terrorizing the neighborhood, it's up to Rodney to save the day! Rowbes Puppet Productions brings this colorful undersea world to life. For ages 3 and up. Library events are free and open to the public. Everyone is welcome!

Art to Action talk, Haiti exhibit, silent auctionJune 24 — In conjunction with the gallery's current exhibit, The HeArt of Haiti, Columbia City Gallery and Strength Through Unity (L'Union Fait La Force) present Art to Action, an evening talk about how art can help Haiti. David Pierre-Louis, a Haitian Seattle resident and Strength through Unity founder, and the nonprofit director Farah Ebrahim will discuss Pierre-Louis' most recent trip to Haiti, the artwork in the gallery's current exhibit, and their organization Strength through Unity. They'll also show a film about Pierre-Louis' most recent trip to Haiti.

art-making at Full TiltI'm spreading the word about a wonderful drop-in art making opportunity. Every Saturday, from 12 - 2ish the Full Tilt ice cream shop in Columbia City hosts The Makery. This amazing roving studio has everything you and your kids need for creative inspiration. This month the focus is on Joseph Cornell and making boxes filled with found objects. They have wonderful papers, vintage buttons, shells, fabric, and many little things that are of mysterious origin.

Starting July 7th, the market will be on Edmunds St. between 36th & 37th every Wednesday from 3-7pm through the end of October. Columbia City Theater Reopens Friday, June 25The newly restored Columbia City Theater is preparing to re-open its doors on Friday, June 25 with a free show featuring Mash Hall, whose Larry Mizell, Jr. was recently appointed by Mayor McGinn to the newly formed Seattle Music Commission. The re-opening celebration continues with more free shows by Grand Hallway (Saturday, June 26), The Maldives (Friday, July 2) and The Whore Moans (Saturday, July 3).

Connor Desai rocks with ice creamConnor Desai's official CD release show happened last week at ToST in Fremont, and she's following up with an all ages jam session at Full Tilt Ice Cream (5041 Rainier Ave S) on Sunday, June 27 at 6pm. "I can't think of a better location for a kid-friendly show then a combination ice cream shop and arcade. When I told my daughter about the venue she just went nuts. I even bought a bunch of inflatable mics and guitars for the show because I want all the kids to be able to rock out with me."
