At the Farmers Market

  • Wednesday October 24 is the annual pumpkin decorating for kids — all pumpkins and supplies provided by the market.
  • Also, Oct 24 is local pizza day: shoppers can taste free samples and learn about how to make these easy, delicious, local & seasonal pizzas at home.
  • The market features fabulous fall produce all the way through Wednesday, October 31! Apples, pears, winter squashes, beautiful greens and lettuces and all kinds of fresh vegetables from local farms, plus cheeses, eggs, meats, breads, cut flowers, ciders and more.
  • Celebrate Halloween at the Farmers Market on October 31! Free hot apple cider, mask-making and face painting for kids & honey sticks for kids in costume.

At the library

  • The Book Club will discuss the novel No-No Boy. It's a story about the aftermath of the Japanese internment and questions of military service during World War II. Frank Abe will lead the discussion with Elizabeth Carr, adult services librarian. Abe is the producer of the film, "In Search of No-No Boy". Sponsored by the library and SouthEast Effective Development (SEED) as part of its Arts Gumbo Book Club. Come out Thursday evening, Nov. 8, at 6:45 p.m. Seattle.
  • Storytimes on Fridays continue with an impressive attendance — about 100 people piled into the meeting room last Friday, braving the elements to come to the library. 26 people came for our new Play-n-Learn program and had lots of fun, too. Join us for storytime at 10:30 am on Fridays and Play n Learn from 11:30-1:00!
  • And check out books about Washington state history and a great posterboard about Columbia City history on display in our historic room for the next few weeks!

Columbia City Cinema

Cinema link

Just in time for Halloween, a night of scary slasher flics, locally produced and starring Danella, the stunning diva waitress/actor/femme fatale, who when she’s not screaming for the camera, can be found taking orders and serving food at Columbia City’s own Geraldine’s Counter. She’s the star of Mime after Midnight, whose tagline for its sellout debut at Cinerama awhile back was “Silent But Deadly.” (Get it? Mime? Silent?)

Now on DVD at the cinema with two other short examples of the genre, Thursday. October 25 at 9:00 P.M., the splatter hour. Watch for blood-soaked Seattle scenes. For more info, go to eekentertainment.com.

The cinema is also hosting a private sneak preview of Jerry Seinfeld's Bee Movie this Saturday at 2:00 P.M, so there's no Michael Clayton at 2:00. This is a private screening set up by the distributor and there is no info about who gets tickets.

See you at the movies.

Columbia City Neighborhood Meeting

October 29 at 6 PM in the library

At the next neighborhood meeting we're going to continue our discussion about building a neighborhood association and prioritize the community affairs issues and community building activities into a winter calendar.

This is just our third meeting and we encourage your participation to make this truly representative of the neighborhood. Invite friends and neighbors. Click here to view our past meeting minutes.

Northwest Community Services Toy Drive

We're collecting new toys to give to needy children of the Rainier Valley! We'll have extra help on November 3, 2007, for the Toy Drive. We'll be collecting toys from 7am-2pm.

4205 Rainier Ave S

We need to get all the toys by December 8, 2007, so we'll know what we have. Checks are welcome — we'll do the shopping for you!

Any questions please don't hesitate to call 206-723-4105 and ask for Rhonda.

Trick-or-Treating in the landmark district

Don't miss tricks and treats along Rainier Avenue on Halloween. Don your best disguise and enter to win Geraldine's costume contest. Take your kids to the Farmers Market for some freebies and mask-making. Stop by Retroactive Kids for a little collage-making and crafts.

For trick-or-treating, look for orange balloons outside participating businesses. It all happens on Wednesday, October 31st from 3 - 6 p.m.

Wean the Wikli of its spamming ways.

no_spam%20.jpg

The Wikli is soooo looking forward to its imminently spam-free lifestyle. Except we certainly don't want to leave you Wikliless.

Hundreds of neighbors have found their way to the Wikli, mainly because the alerts go to lots of local listservs. The Wikli has committed to a twelve-week program… After that, it's cold turkey — Wikli alerts only for those who have asked for them. This is week 10, so you've got two more weeks. Or you could just opt in now.
