Seattle MathFest 2013

Seattle MathFest is a city-wide celebration of elementary school communities and math, hosted by Seattle-based nonprofit Zeno. This is a one-of-a-kind event where elementary students and their siblings play math games, win prizes and have fun. While playing, students build their confidence in and enthusiasm for math.

How does Zeno do this?
With a carnival, of course! Teachers, kids and their families walk into a festive setting, greeted by friendly volunteers at the check-in table. From then on, it is all fun and games. Kids move from one table to the next playing different games; they can roll dice, play cards or jump on a giant bar graph. They might guess the number of human ears that can fit into the size of an elephant ear. No matter what games kids chose, there is a high probability of them leaving the event with just a bit more love than loathe for math.

Whether you are an educator, family member or a student, you will find ways to see, touch and experience math at Seattle MathFest.

Why is there a need for a community event of this scale?
According to the Washington State Report Card from September 2013, nearly 40 percent of fourth grade students in Washington State are failing at math. Too many kids are closing the door on math at an early age and limiting their potential. In a community that does not accept statements like "Reading just isn't my thing," why is it acceptable to hear kids say “I’m just not any good at math"?

For some of us, the very idea of doing math has sent shudders down our spines from early childhood. Zeno is changing the game by turning math nightmares into pleasant memories by reaching kids where their attitudes about math are first formed. Math is not something to be tackled, armed with pencil and paper, but something to be explored with an open mind and a deck of cards.
