Northwest residents will have a rare opportunity to hear Nellie Wong as she shares a banquet of poems from her fourth book, Breakfast Lunch Dinner at a reading on Saturday, December 1 in South Seattle.

Inspired by her immigrant family, Wong's new book serves up the flavors of Oakland Chinatown. Her poetry is a spicy blend of art and activism, infused with feminism, family lore and recipes, workplace battles and the search for identity as a Chinese American writer-radical. A co-founder of the Asian American performance group Unbound Feet, Wong was featured in the documentary film, Mitsuye & Nellie: Asian American Poets. A renowned author and organizer in the Asian American community, Wong was honored last year when students at Oakland High School, her alma mater, voted to name a building after her.

Wong's other books include Dreams in Harrison Railroad Park, The Death of Long Steam Lady and Stolen Moments. Her pieces have appeared in over 200 publications and been translated into Spanish, Chinese, French and Italian. Two of her pieces are installed at public sites in San Francisco.

A reception, featuring an Asian fusion appetizer buffet begins at 6:00pm, followed by the reading at 7:00pm. A door donation of $2.00 is requested, and the buffet is $9.00. The gathering is hosted by the Freedom Socialist Party. For more information or to request childcare, call 722-2453 or email moc.gnirpsdnim|elttaesPSF#moc.gnirpsdnim|elttaesPSF.
