Columbia City will be swinging with the sizzling sounds of a summer Jazzathon from 11 am to 7 pm on Saturday, July 21st, at six locations along Rainier Avenue South. The Jazzathon, a fundraising event of the Seattle-based nonprofit organization Jazz Night School, is free of charge to attend. More than forty participating musicians, who are students of the school, have obtained pledges on a per-songs-played basis, and will be attempting to reach personal goals of playing fifty songs or more in this all day marathon gig.
The proceeds will support music education in the greater Seattle community in several ways: 1) Expanded program offerings, scholarships, and access to musical instruments for under-served youth; 2) Facilities enhancement to aid in instruction; 3) Coordination with social organizations to provide live jazz at facilities such as nursing homes; 4) Preservation of jazz music and culture through programs to educate the greater community.
"Jazz Night School is a supportive learning environment for students of all ages and abilities," said executive director Erik Hanson. "This is a great place to learn jazz and to make connections with others in the community - come join us celebrate and participate in Seattle's rich jazz tradition."
The live bands will play standards written by jazz greats such as Thelonious Monk, Duke Ellington, and Miles Davis from: 11 am to 3 pm at Tutta Bella Neapolitan Pizzeria, Jus Bar, and Starbucks; and then from 3 pm to 7 pm at Lottie's Lounge, The Royal Room, and Empire Espresso Bar.
