Climate Solutions from Buddha
Speaker: Vishaka Smith, Ph.D.

Over 2500 years ago Buddha realized the natural laws of the world and provided us with a path to follow in order to create health, peace and freedom within us and around us which included our environment i.e. other living beings and the nature. His teachings are applicable even today because those are the laws that describe how things manifest in the world including our climate. Dr. Smith will compare and contrast aspects of what Buddha taught with how most of us live today and point out things we can do to reduce climate change.
Speaker: Vishaka Smith, Ph.D.
Vishaka is a Registered Professional Civil Engineer originally from Sri Lanka. She has been practicing meditation since a young adult and has attended 14 residential retreats 9-10 days long and one 28-day retreat. She practices mindfulness meditation daily. Vishaka is passionate about protecting environmental and human health, and so developed a methodology to control urban nonpoint source pollution, for which she received her Ph.D. in Environmental Policy and Management from the University of New Orleans. She also has a M.S. in Civil and Environmental Engineering and a B.S. in Civil Engineering. Currently, she is trained as a Carbon Coach by the city of Seattle to support resource conservation efforts in the community. She is a small business owner actively pursuing her passion as a Coach/consultant/contractor. She is Sustainability Co-Chair at the Wedgwood Elementary, and a board member of the condo she lives and a volunteer of the Freedom (Prisoners to Peacemakers) Project.
