Get Better at Making Things Better— Guiding Lights Weekend March 25 - 26

Hundreds of citizens and prominent national and local community leaders will gather at Seattle Center on March 25 & 26 to participate in the sixth annual Guiding Lights Weekend, a conference on community-building and the art of citizenship. The two-day conference will focus all the creative, passionate energy of over 50 world-class luminaries and workshop leaders on the theme of Great Citizenship.


The sixth annual gathering presents inspirational workshops, powerful panel discussions, exciting art experiences, and superb networking. Train to be a 21st century citizen-leader through powerful, hands-on workshops that will give you real tools for solving real problems: “How to talk about race”; “How to lobby”; “How to create a mass civic event”; “How to make a decision in public”; “How to use art to mobilize a community”- and many more. US Secretary of Education Arne Duncan will speak and answer questions by live video conference, Justice Sandra Day O’Connor appears in an exclusive video interview with Eric Liu. Speaking live is green economy pioneer Van Jones, environmentalist Bill McKibben, and Seattle’s own Dan Savage, author and founder of the It Gets Better Project.

Participants will have many opportunities to share ideas and participate in the conversation through interaction, tangible planning projects, and vigorous discussion. Friday night will feature the Citizens’ Salon, a mini-TEDx like experience in five “acts”, with presenters and artists sharing thoughts on different themes with audience contributions, answering questions like “What does being a great citizen mean to YOU?”.

The weekend offers an opportunity to meet people from around the country and work with them to discover the best ways to make a difference in all of our communities.
