Super Saturday: Bats, Pumpkins, and Owls! Oh My!
Saturday, October 25th, 10:00 AM—10:00 PM
Wow – do we have a full day of fun events planned! Join us at the Center for a day of learning about and celebrating bats, carving pumpkins, telling stories, dissecting owl pellets and more! See below for activities and times.
10:00 AM—3:00 PM
Create bat puppets, color bat masks, learn about bat calls, bat boxes, and much, much more with knowledgeable volunteers from Bats Northwest and Center staff.
10:00 AM—5:00 PM
In celebration of Halloween, join our pumpkin carving and/or pumpkin painting party in the downstairs classroom. BYOP (bring your own pumpkin) or use one of ours for a nominal donation. We'll provide patterns, tools, tarps, paints, paintbrushes, and all the accoutrements, including a candle! Plan to bring your pumpkin up to the amphitheatre for storytelling at 6:00 PM.
11:00 AM—12:30 PM
Guided Nature Walk: Survivor! Urban Bat Edition
Join us on a walk of batty survival skills. Through games and interpretive talks, you'll learn what to eat, where and when to sleep, and when and where to take cover here on Bailey Peninsula – home to many bats. Will you survive as a bat in Seward Park? Join us and find out if you have what it takes to be an urban bat! This walk has a difficulty level of moderate and will be approximately 2 miles in length.
Cost: Standard program fees.
6:00—7:00 PM
Halloween Storytelling in the Amphitheatre
Bring your pumpkin and, weather permitting, join us at the Amphitheatre for a special evening of spooky storytelling in the outdoors! We’ll light the pumpkins and put them on the stage for everyone to admire while we enjoy an hour of professional storytelling. Storytelling will occur inside at the Center in case of inclement weather.
Admission is free but donations are welcome!
7:00—8:30 PM
Owl Prowl Party
If you’ve got any energy left, follow us back to the Center for an evening of lessons on owls, including story time, games, crafts, and owl pellet dissections.
Recommended ages: All. Cost: Free.
8:00—9:30 PM
Owl Prowl in the Park!
For those still awake, join us on a hike deep into the forest to call down the resident barred owls. This is a great opportunity to have a safe and exciting night hike in the forest and to learn how to “speak” owl. Limited to the first 20 registrants.
Recommended ages: Anyone able to stay awake until 10:00 PM and walk 1-2 miles!
Cost: Standard program fees.
