The City's Department of Planning and Development has published a notice of recommendation for a proposed rezone at the northwest corner of S Alaska & Martin Luther King Jr Way S.

Seattle Housing Authority seeks to rezone the corner lot from residential Lowrise 4 (37' heights) to Neighborhood Commercial 1-40 (40' heights), including a pedestrian overlay. SHA has requested the rezone to facilitate the development of ground-level commercial space next to the Columbia City light rail station.

A public hearing to take public comment on the Director's recommendation and to establish the record for this application will be held on: July 11, 2008 at 9am at the Office of the Hearing Examiner

The Department of Planning and Development is reviewing an application to remediate contaminated soils at the corner of S Alaska and MLK Jr Wy S. I think there was a dry cleaner here once, among other things, before light rail construction (maybe a service station before that?)

The property has sat vacant for years, in spite of a rezone awhile back. Maybe this is a sign that something will happen here soon.
