Wikli alerts Feed your habit: another way to get your Wikli fix.

The Citizens' Wikli is the collaborative weekly circular of Columbia Citizens. It relays announcements and messages of interest to Columbia City neighbors. Anyone can contribute, and anyone can edit.

Many Citizens get weekly emailed alerts pointing them to the latest Wikli. Here's another option: get them as a news feed. Feeds are a convenient and timely way to find out about updates to sites. Feeds arrive as bulleted items for easy browsing. You'll need a feed reader to view updates.

Columbia Citizens offers a variety of feeds, so you can home in on what interests you — read more.

Here's what you'll find in this week's Wikli:

—> Somebody's stealing bikes.

—> Powerful stuff: local kids read their work at Starbucks.

—> A Citizen offers a neighborhood class in organic gardening.

—> And there's lots more news and insight.

This is the 30th Wikli, and it's time to regroup. So this one is a tri-Wikli — the next one will post on April 16.

This week's Wikli is short and sweet — the better to read top to toe.

  • There's a report-out on new development at Columbia Plaza,
  • the historical society is gearing up for a birthday, their 117th,
  • a book about growing up in Columbia City,
  • and a Citizen's alert about a home burglary.

There's that and more. Check it out.

Columbia City's buzzing …it must be springtime.

This week we put these bugs in your ear (ewww…)

  • Visit the first 2008 FARMERS MARKET and BEATWALK.
  • CCCC's post-pancake-party program: participate please!
  • The neighborhood and its neighbors are all over the blogosphere.
  • In news… sheesh… a small-time sniper and a small-screen inspired stabbing

Now to mix & mangle more entomological idioms…

Wikli alerts make their move
scottplanscottplan 1210165443|%e %b %Y, %H:%M %Z|agohover

For this week's Wikli, the emailed alert focuses on shifting to a bigger system, with alerts that'll look a lot like this.

Alerts go to hundreds of neighbors, numbers that have begun to test the limits of standard email. In terms of neighbor outreach, that's a great problem to have. In terms of bleary-eyed late-night messaging, it's something of a logistical challenge.

A solution is to move the Citizens' list to a reliable email service, like feedblitz.com

  • Like the current arrangement, you'll get one Wikli alert per week — it'll look something like this.
  • From the Columbia Citizens discussion board, you can also opt in to get a daily digest of Citizen comments.
  • This system protects your email privacy.
  • The switch should be hassle-free, and opting out is also straightforward — there's an "unsubscribe" link at the bottom of each alert.

You're welcome to get a jump on it now.

Thanks.

the Wikli and a chunk of change
scottplanscottplan 1210746392|%e %b %Y, %H:%M %Z|agohover

Columbia Citizens get a chunk of change this week. And we're not talking about tax rebates. We're talking about change at Columbia Plaza, in library staffing, and in street improvements.

Here are some highlights —

  • Columbia Plaza is up for another round of public review with the Landmarks Committee.
  • The City plans for street improvements.
  • Columbia librarians are leaving.
  • Two simultaneous (?) strategy sessions to improve public schools.
  • Booty Camp comes to Seward Park.

There's all that and more.

Last week we streamlined Wikli emailed alerts. What better time to spread the Wikli word? So this week only, alerts go out to the gamut of local lists. Please pardon the repeats if you belong to more than one list.

Enjoy,

S.

    • Super Saturdays at Seward.
  • Citizens have posted about crime-related concerns.
  • We've got our very own Columbia City-centric Craigslist.

  • Beatwalk is this week.
  • There's a Design Review meeting.
  • There's art and dance to spare.
  • There are some great events at Seward Park.
  • Also check out a new project to take down chain-link fences in the neighborhood.
  • And Columbia City was on TV this week, including BeatWalk and Columbia Citizens. Now how exactly does one present a neighborhood wiki on TV? Take a look.

So how are you weathering this week? No really — summer's just around the corner.

Ever the optimist, this week's Wikli points you to a slew of neighborhood activities in our great outdoors:

  • designing a SPPIFfy playspace at Seward Park,
  • Columbia City's garden tour,
  • a work party at Hitt's Hill,
  • strawberries and cherries at the farmers market,
  • bicycling and running along Lake Washington.

Whether you want movement that's good for your heart or you've put your heart into a good movement, this week offers you plenty.

  • There's a march and a walk, both for great causes.
  • For playground activists, there's a short survey about Seward Park's future playspace.
  • For neighborhood design advocates, the Landmarks Committee will take a fourth look at the Columbia Plaza project.
  • For rebels, there's a reading circle.
  • You can try out a Wii at the library.
  • For sociable joggers, there's the C-City Runners.
  • For an evening of politics under the influence, there's Drinking Liberally.

This is week XL (40) of the Citizens' Wikli — and surprise, it's supersized.

a rich Citizens' offering
scottplanscottplan 1214377802|%e %b %Y, %H:%M %Z|agohover

For our weekly helping of neighborhood insight and inspiration, Columbia Citizens appreciatively draw on the offerings of several neighborhood bloggers. They're collected in the "blogossiphere", which is playfully tongue in cheek — these are rich perspectives on daily life, art, family, and the places we share.

Among this week's posts:

  • John Hoole on the Death and Life of urban parks.
  • Doug Cargill stirs up some urbanists at hugeasscity
  • some zanily inspired artwork at Gather
  • David Goldstein on cats and coyotes
  • Amber Campbell on all things Rainier Valley
  • and the Captain says you can have it Both Ways.

There's all that in Wikli XLI — plus bikes that boggle the mind, owl prowls, hands-on henna, architectural walking tours and more.

Enjoy,

Neighborhood wiki participation is inversely proportional to the intensity and diurnal duration of a bright celestial orb heretofore relatively unknown in these parts.

This week's Wikli is concise. So what better focus than upcoming garden workshops, picnics, and block parties!

Among this week's links:

  • news from local schools, both uplifting and disturbing
  • kids caught stealing bikes
  • more coyotes
  • (It's true!) — a new restaurant at 51st & Wilson & Dawson
  • more restaurant news and reviews
  • some good laughs from the Kidde Woodward family.

Columbia Citizens appeared on the neighborhood scene a year ago, on 7/7/07. Its main goal has been to help neighbors share information and collaborate to make this an even better place to live.

This week's Citizen’s Wikli takes that mission to heart.

  • There are creative ideas for summer fun (join in!)
  • There's a Climate Action Lab.
  • Block parties are popping up.
  • There's news of a new restaurant.
  • And there are our popular summertime events — farmers market & Beatwalk

  • Our summer arts scene is heating up.

  • It's a busy weekend with picnics and pictures, plants and plans.

It's that top-of-the-summer week, when there's always a festive event within easy reach.

  • Beatwalk is back,
  • Seafair has landed,
  • we're shutting down the streets,
  • and Dwell's throwing a house party.
  • You can check out details of a block party or a blockbuster, caffeinated poetry or carbon-free parking, a wonderful parade or waterfront pedaling, southeast Asian sounds or the whole southeast Seattle scene.

Dunno about you, but the papers had me thinking southeast Seattle is an angry, dangerous place these days. This week's Citizens' Wikli has helped me put things back in perspective.

Here's a sampling:

  • The hometown parade is coming.
  • Shakespeare is in the park.
  • A teen was shot and killed on a local sidewalk.
  • Mission Baptist Church is getting a makeover.
  • The library harbors snakes.
  • Gardens are bursting.
  • The arts are flowing over.

Citizens have shared their takes on the neighborhood — news and views, ideas and ideals, insights and outreach.

A year ago this week, we pulled together the first Citizens' Wikli, "Columbia City's collaborative community cyber circular". In honor of this prodigious milestone, the Wikli is… taking an extended siesta.

Wiklis will be scarce for a couple weeks, so get yours while you can!

This week:

  • Arts Gumbo is kicking off.
  • You get a preview of a phenomenal Sept BeatWalk.
  • The Cinema will grow to three screens.
  • A trove of local, organic blackberries.
  • Saffron's open.
  • The market's offering a free canning class.
  • The community mourned a murdered boy.
  • Hillman Citizens are discussing gangs.

There's all that and much more.

  • Car-free Columbia City was fantastically footloose, and we've got the photos to prove it.
  • There's plenty for arts enthusiasts.
  • many unsettling crime reports
  • some long-overdue notes about Columbia Plaza
  • an outdoor movie in Hillman City

  • Coming soon? Full Tilt Ice Cream

It's one of the best things about neighborhood living — connecting with people who work together to make ours a good place. See them, believe in them, and by all means join them.

  • Neighbors have some great ideas for a new Seward Park playground, and SPPIF is hosting its third and last community meeting tonight.
  • On Friday, Columbia City will have four new, interactive parks.
  • Come on out to a great local show for a fantastic local cause: Po' Girl for Bike Works.
  • Musicians converge on Columbia City in a benefit concert for autism research.
  • Kick up your heels at a Lakewood square dance.

Fence-B-gone

In Columbia City, this is a good week to be paying attention. With all that's happening around and amongst us, you might just get swept up in it.

  • Columbia Plaza's application is in.
  • Villa Victoria vanishes.
  • Tuesdays are Salsa Night at the Columbia City Theater.
  • Beatwalk is on.
  • John Hoole proffers his perspective on neighborhood NIMBYs.
  • Naturalists from Parks share ideas on coyote coexistance.
  • Palin-Biden are on at the theater.
  • Columbia City, mapped in stars, is a dove.
  • Mikala joins a chain-link gang, and takes a page from Frost:

Before I built a wall I'd ask to know
What I was walling in or walling out,
And to whom I was like to give a fence.
Something there is that doesn't love a wall,
That wants it down.

There's art, food, music, politics, and plenty of news to go around.

a time to mourn, and a time to dance
scottplanscottplan 1223441400|%e %b %Y, %H:%M %Z|agohover

For some, it's been a challenging week of hard truths, witnessed through a lens of wisdom, strength and grace. When the times test our mettle, then maybe it's time to step out and be a part of something.

  • Jerry Large pens a sympathetic piece as Naomi Smith closes the door at Villa Victoria.
  • The shelves are bare at the food bank.
  • Torture and brutality exposed through art — a posthumous tribute to Citizen Selma Waldman.
  • There's a fitness and strength competition sponsored by Columbia City Fitness.
  • Ozya, Arts Gumbo's musical play about Southeast Seattle immigration, migration and gentrification.
  • Citizens share insights about Columbia Plaza.
  • New dance classes: African rhythms, swing, and waltz — what’s your beat?

Your neighborhood embraces all that and much more.

Last week was stunningly beautiful, and we've got the photos to prove it. This week… we have high hopes it'll be even better.

  • Flying Squirrel pizza opens in Genesee/Seward Park.
  • Columbia Plaza is back before the Landmarks Board.
  • SSCPC sponsors an internet safety presentation.
  • Our neighborhood brunch skips a beat.
  • Bathed in autumn sunshine, we're treated to a riot of colorful neighborhood photos.
  • All the treats that a sweet-toothed monster could desire.
  • There's a proliferation of political pumpkins.
  • The Royal Esquire and the Columbia City Theater host election night galas.
  • And of course, before anyone gets to celebrate, there's that important civic matter to attend to…

There's all that and more.

Enjoy,

Fellow Citizens, this morning we celebrate a minor miracle. Last night, while we goggled the coverage, googled the stats, and giggled gleefully at election-night galas, somehow, against overwhelming odds, the Wikli dismissed the distractions, gave the pundits a pass, and pulled itself together.

… so, who won?

In the neighborhood, let's tend to our grassroots!

  • BeatWalk is this Friday.
  • Citizens plan for more community gardens
  • Can we organize a farm produce dropoff?
  • a benefit for Bike Works
  • The darkest day is coming: how will we celebrate solstice?
  • Our newest pizzeria gets rave reviews.
  • Kids and adults celebrate MathFest.
  • Trick or treat portraits and voter photos
  • A neighborhood developer gets egged

There's all that and more.

Enjoy,

S.

In the spirit of the era, Columbia Citizens share a wealth of potential.

  • We're preparing for a Citizens' solstice.
  • Might our divided district councils make up and be friends?
  • BioLyle offers a biodiesel workshop.

We know Columbia City's music scene is hoppin', but this week it's over the top. It's a good week to give the neighborhood some face time.

  • Beatwalk's on — last of the season, until May.
  • You could be serenaded by the Christmas Ships.
  • BlueStreet Voices is putting on a show.
  • There's Jazz Night School and Music For Everyone.
  • Arts Gumbo: "World Music of Peace"

Sure it's bleak out there. The darkest days are the best time to pull together, spread our compassion, and share in some joy and revelry. We've got plenty to be merry about.

  • The Rainier Valley Food Bank is bustling — and you're part of the solution.
  • There's a Holiday Kids' Fair at the Theater.
  • Celebrate Solstice in style, with lights and noise.
  • Arts Gumbo presents World Music of Peace.
  • Mothers listen to each other.
  • Denise and friends are organizing another March For Youth.

This Wikli has retreated to a warmly lit cafe, hands wrapped round a hot drink, watching snowflakes drift lazily through the auras of streetlights. The Wikli's taking a few weeks off. But don't let that keep you from tapping in to see what your neighbors have shared.

  • It's Jazz Night at the theater.
  • Awash throws an Ethiopian Hannukah party.
  • Columbia Plaza is back for review.
  • Mikala shares her winter wonder.
  • Sunday we celebrate Solstice.
  • The CCBA offers ideas for shopping locally.
  • Give and Get at the Gallery.

Don't know about you, but this Citizen kinda enjoyed weathering the storm of "ought eight". Sure, the City could have done a better job of grooming its new public ski trails, but it was an adventure to remember.

After three weeks of lazing around, the Wikli's back in business —

  • The Gallery's holding a silent auction.
  • Citizens offer classes in stress reduction, Brazilian dance, Musikgarten for kids, and more.
  • The library has storytime for babies.
  • You're invited to Orca's garden party.
  • June BlueSpruce is leading a dream circle.
  • There's a wikli windfall of whitewashed winterland images.
  • And there are scads of Citizen posts in the blogossiphere and in the Columbia Citizens discussion board.

Maybe it goes without saying, but let's just say it anyway. It's awesome to live in an active neighborhood. Every week, without fail, somebody steps up to organize some fun event, to start an engaging local discussion, to share an opinion, an image or a little-known story. There's a lot in here, because there's so much out there. This week is no exception.

  • Future construction at Columbia Plaza is back before the landmarks committee (rain, shine, or blizzard — this time we mean it).
  • Josie blogs a fun history lesson about Phalen's hall, home to today's bakery.
  • Sustainable South Seattle is talking local food with Councilmember Conlin.
  • Make MLK a day of service with the Rainier Valley Food Bank.
  • Captain Columbia City is back to neighbo-blogging.
  • You've got to check out this week's Citizen photos — fantastic.
  • Neighbors gather to march, to knit, to read, to run, and to dance.

You can do all that and more.

From the national scene to the neighborhood one, what better time to tap in and take part?

  • There were children's marches and children's gardens, reported and photographed in our blogossiphere.
  • The library hosts a "comixtravaganza", led by a talented local cartoonist.
  • Joanne asks you , "what's our mission here?" and starts a conversation.
  • Arts In Motion is offering free sessions, looking to expand its music instruction to area kids.
  • Friends of Seward Park are wondering — what to do with the park's wooded upland trails? And they've got an online survey all ready for you.
  • The Rainier Valley Rotary Club meets regularly at Tutta Bella.
  • Mikala's looking for budding neighborhood archivists.
  • The Rainier Valley Food Bank reports back from Monday's food drive.
  • In less than a week, Fred has conjured up an enthusiastic neighborhood board-game group.
  • Citizens request and share referrals for house projects, hairdressers, vegetarian fare, computers, and more. Have you got suggestions to share?

When the news from the wider world seems too bleak, come on in for some home-grown inspiration about what's (mostly) working right.

  • The New School garners high praise.

This week's Wikli is exhausted from just thinking about how its fellow Citizens exert themselves. Wasn't it Charles Atlas who said exercise is 50% mental? Read your Wikli and you'll be halfway there.

  • Wiping sweat from her brow, (eye)rean has tilled, seeded and watered several new pages about south-end gardening.
  • Citizen volunteers tend to our urban forest at Cheasty greenbelt.
  • The C-City runners have hit their stride.
  • A power-lifting granny graces Bull's fitness center
  • There's Brazilian dance on Rainier, and fitness to Latin and Caribbean rhythms in Lakewood.
  • The Theater presents a new month of women in music.
  • Neighbors discussed transit oriented development in the south end.
  • There are pictures of period police …and prehistoric poultry.
  • Nikchick serves up scrumptious snapshots of brunch at Verve.
  • And in neighborhood blogging, the RVP does this week's heavy lifting.

There's a lot to love (and a lot to lament) in this week's neighborhood news.

  • Citizens put heart and soul into Hitt's Hill.
  • Orca has its open house and an art silent auction.
  • Hillman City clues are the keys to its hearts.
  • New Freeway Hall hosts a meal and a film about organizing the first African-American union.
  • Sustainable South Seattle discusses transit oriented development.
  • New housing is stalled at Rainier Vista.
  • …where, incidentally, Mayor Nickels is to deliver his "state of the city".
  • Lakewood/Seward Park Community Club is in the lurch.
  • Hillman City sees a hit-and-run from a four-car accident.
  • The Cinema draws the Academy's best.
  • Also in our blogossiphere, there are guns, kitty adoptions, free flu shots, and much more.

This one's a bi-Wikli. Let's pull the next one together on Feb 25.

It's a spring thing. Community gardeners dig it. Neighbo-bloggers dig it. How about you? Get out, get busy, get dirty.

  • Orca students see their first sprouts.
  • Iris rallies neighbors to tend our sidewalk garden.
  • The BIA looks to clean up the business district — and they're hiring.
  • The RVP rises above the blogossiphere.
  • Listening Mothers share what matters.
  • Catch up with neighbors at Sunday's brunch.
  • The gallery announces its new show.
  • free mammograms at Curves
  • Citizens welcome our newest, formerly homeless neighbors.
  • bird banding at Seward Park
  • Full Tilt Ice Cream is a go.

Disappearing ballyhoo by James Callan.

How to keep track of all this change? In a neighborhood like ours, we gotta get the input and insights of the folks around us.

On the business end, we're seeing shops come and go. On the ecological front, we're monitoring bird populations. We're hosting and growing some great musical talents. And right under our noses, we're seeing some prized possessions just vanish…

  • Full Tilt Ice Cream hurtles headlong into its new Columbia City digs — just in time for summer.
  • Gather closes shop.
  • Help Seward Park band its birds.
  • Bruce & Bonnie host their very own Prairie Home Companion.
  • Senator Adam Kline invites you to show up, to advocate for this year's budget priorities.
  • A historical vignette about Simeon Toby and his wandering monument.
  • The neighborhood is flush with musikgartens.
  • Thieves snatch a laptop right out from underneath a Citizen's fingertips.

No need to maintain appearances here, this is the real deal.

  • A Citizen brings new life to Gather, and to found objects.

  • Mothers listen, and musikgartens enlighten.

When it comes to the last minute, the Wikli is in its element. How else could Tuesday's blank page miraculously transform itself into Wednesday's fully formed newsletter? Sure, it's a little hectic living on the edge like this. But Citizens agree that Mark Twain got it right: "Never put off until tomorrow what you can do the day after tomorrow".

Good luck with those 1040s! In the meantime, here's plenty to keep you busy:

Little by little, daylight extends an outstretched hand to draw us into our great outdoors. More walkers, more bikers, more gardeners, more kids out playing — more chances to connect with the folks around you. Our sidewalks, gardens, and parks are Columbia City's neighborly third place.

Columbia Citizens have a garden of sorts in this site. It thrives with some seeding, feeding, and a little weeding. The work is light — go ahead, get your hands dirty!

  • The Rotarists interview the dentists.
  • Arts In Motion offers summer camps.
  • a CD-release party for the homeless
  • bird Banding and an author lecture at Seward Park
  • Jami Sieber plays at the Southeast Senior Center.
  • In Citizen posts,

  • In the blogossiphere, the Local Natives play at the CC Theater.

Maybe April is the cruellest month, as T.S. Eliot suggests. If so, then Citizens have endured the anticipation heroically.

Now it's May to the rescue! Spring in Columbia City connects us with our place, with live musicians, with the people who produce our food, and with each other. The farmers market opens, BeatWalk is back, Bicycle Sundays get rolling, and neighbors nosh over brunch — all of that, wrapped up in one very active week.

  • the farmers market!
  • BeatWalk!
  • bicycle Sundays!
  • The Historical Society celebrates its 118th.
  • Harbor applies for land use permits (St Gobain site).
  • DINKs at Verve
  • Columbia City hairstylists go head to head.
  • In the blogossiphere,
    • there's crocheting at the library,
    • free May Day acupuncture,
    • a gunpoint robbery in Hillman City,
    • planning for the March for Youth,
    • Orca garden pics,
    • reviews of recent shows at the CC Theater,
    • and a liquor license for Full Tilt (beer floats anyone?)
  • In Citizen posts,
    • a preschool-fundraising rummage sale,
    • LWSP Neighborhood Association wine tasting,
    • and victory gardens to help the hungry.

It's all there, and much more.

Enjoy,

S.

Passing a sunny Sunday afternoon bicycling the boulevard through swirling cherry blossoms — now ain't that a picture of bliss? This weekend and on into the summer, the waterfront is yours to savor.

It's bike-to-work month, so take a look at your neighbors' preferred bike routes. And this Saturday you get to take the kids and last years' wheels down to Genesee Park, to trade up at Bike Works' annual bike swap.

Nine out of ten Citizens agree: Columbia City and environs are even better on two wheels (and that tenth Citizen is a die-hard walker).

  • Orca K-8 @ Whitworth is putting on their annual garden sale.
  • RVCP has its annual rummage sale.
  • There's a work party at Hitt's Hill.
  • There are all kinds of ideas for Mothers Day — hair, jazz, massage, and more.
  • Rainier Valley Food Bank invites you to step up.
  • Swine flu no longer hogs the limelight.
  • There are plenty of photos and posts from the blogossiphere.
  • And in Citizen posts, housing seems to be the hot commodity.

It's all there, and much more.

Enjoy,

S.

Columbia Citizens are a plugged-in bunch. We pride ourselves in knowing each other and staying connected with what's happening in the neighborhood. And into the fabric of our day-to-day contacts we've integrated this web of online resources — this wiki site, email groups, and more.

Recently Citizens have moved things up a notch further — there's an active facebook group, and a growing community of Columbia Twitterzens. Seems there's a lot of Columbia City 2.0 in this week's Wikli.

  • The P-I's Big Blog is hosting a meetup in Columbia Park.
  • Now you can get your Wikli fix via facebook.
  • We're starting to pull together neighborhood tweets.
  • NPost networks at the Theater.
  • It's strawberry season at the farmers market.
  • Full Tilt Ice Cream sets its opening date for July 3.
  • Join our neighborhood bike league.
  • Windermere paints the town red with Columbia City Night Out.

Our neighborhood wiki kicked off two years ago, on 7/7/07. Since then we've filled pages & pages with the life and times of our cozy corner of the universe.

Seems like this week's sunny skies have lured many of us offline. So this Wikli is short and sweet — the better to read top to toe.

  • The library hosts a magic show and a circus.
  • Sustainable South Seattle is busy with a picnic and parade prep.
  • Help out at Hitt's Hill, share a free lunch.
  • The Gallery has a light rail sale, and issues calls to artists.
  • Volunteer at the food bank's next drive.
  • A renowned children's advocate speaks in Columbia City (news).
  • In the blogossiphere,

This week's edition is Wikli 100, and it's a good time to take a Wikli breather. Time to regroup and focus on ideas to make the site more accessible, more engaging, and more useful for Columbia Citizens.

The newsletter will be back in the springtime, but the rest of our site — the calendar, the discussion board, the photo gallery — will still be humming.

  • The farmers market is awarding gift certificates.
  • There's lots going on for Halloween.
  • Arts Gumbo presents Asian kinetic theater.
  • The Valley rallies for McGinn.
  • The community cooks and feasts together.
  • Many neighbors pulled together to discuss the future of Columbia School.
  • The Boys and Girls Club dedicates its new mural.
  • Sustainable South Seattle celebrates and plans.
  • Free acupuncture for your food donation.
  • In our blogossiphere —
    • Bookfest is coming.
    • Public Schools' new assignment plan and Rainier Vista.
    • Orca's gardeners are out in force.
    • Columbia City gets a love letter.
  • In Citizen comments —
    • Neighbors walk for lung cancer research.
    • Joanne offers up strings of holiday lights.
    • A new nonprofits looks for other nonprofit tenants.
    • Hillman Citizens tour the Graham business district.
    • A neighbor posts about an attempted assault.
    • Neighbors offer and seek services.
  • And there are loads of captivating new images by some really talented photographers.

There's all that and much more. Check it out!
