The Hanford Nuclear Site is America's largest and most-contaminated nuclear facility — and is 200 miles southeast of Seattle. Though out of production, the massive legacy of toxic and radioactive materials threatens our waterways and air quality. Hanford radioactivity has found its way into Hood Canal, and the long-lived nature of these contaminants mayl pose a threat to numerous future generations.
Against this backdrop, the government is planning on doubling and even tripling the inventory of toxic trash at Hanford by shipping it here from other nuclear facilities around the country and the world.
A new group has formed to take on Hanford's challenges, and is set to reform the cleanup. Hanford Challenge was started by Tom Carpenter (who has lived in Columbia City since 1992). Tom was the director of the national non-profit Government Accountability Project's Nuclear Oversight Program.
The Kickoff Party for this group is on March 20, at the Columbia City Theater, from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. The party features live music by The Coyotes, and will be emceed by Seattle improv actor Matt Smith.
