What's missing in the business lineup of the neighborhood?
Anonymous (24.19.7.x) 1196045987|%e %b %Y, %H:%M %Z|agohover

We have a nice list of businesses in this area. Someone maintains a list here, for example: http://www.columbiacityseattle.com

But what do we not yet have?

I'll start:
- a sushi place
- a local hardware / garden shop

What do you want to see move into the neighborhood?

One way to think about this problem is to ask, "What do I have to drive to get?"
Some things that inevitably require a drive to West Seattle, Tukwila, or even
downtown, include:

Shoes and clothes
Sporting goods
Electronics (audio and video)
Art and craft supplies

Probably much more, but those are what I think of off the top of my head!

On a maybe related subject, does anyone have any idea what's going on with the former
Long's site next to the Safeway? That's a big anchor store to be empty for so long….

A kid friendly (e.g., has an area for kids to play) coffeeshop like Tougo's
in the CD.

A Thai restaurant (seriously, we'd be there all the time instead of driving the br
the bridge to West Seattle)

A Gymboree-type place for kid's classes though privately owned would
be great

A Trader Joes (wouldn't that be great in the old Longs location?)

An "everything" store like the old Chubby and Tubbys

Arts and crafts center with classes (like knitting, felting etc - Retroactive
Kids has offered some classes but i'd love to have a place with more
offerings- I need to learn to sew!!)

new Thai restaurant?

All those Citizens who asked for Thai? Prayers answered.

Here's the liquor license application for the Spice Room. It'll be next door to sushi, that other popular request.

update: Scott's comment below seems right. "Puri" and "Sarveshwar" do have an East Indian ring to them, don't they? Last month I heard Thai was coming to that spot. Anyone know for sure?

How about an authentic Greek restaraunt and a bagel shop :-)…Yum, warm bagels and cream cheese in the morning!
I also love the idea of a Trader Joes in the Long's vacant building.

While I'd love to have a Trader Joe's in the hood as much as anyone, I just don't see that happening — especially in the former Long's site. I would be VERY surprised if Safeway's lease doesn't have some language that prevents another grocery store in that location.

This site is really going to be a difficult one to fill, in my opinion. The space is too big for many businesses (e.g. a dollar store), but too small for the big guys (e.g. Fred Meyer). I would say that the most likely tenant in that space would be some sort of second-tier discounter along the lines of Big Lots or Tuesday Morning.

Columbia City seems fine the way it is. Out of all the communities along Rainier Ave. S, CC is already "fully baked." So many other communites both north and south along Rainier Ave. need so much attention, it's sad. It was great that CC was able to renew itself, mostly due to a couple of developers who happened to have the money and interest to do this.

Where are the other developers who have the money to help renew the other communities along Rainier Ave? Where are the PR and marketing efforts for enticing these developers? What's going on with these efforts, if anything? Has the Mayor's plan to push Seattle's homeless into South Seattle also pushing out quality developers (the ones who don't just want "affordable" housing projects)?

I am still hoping for a local take-out pizza joint to arrive in our neighborhood - one of a quality better than what we have now at Dawson & Wilson.

Great question!

Sushi would be really, really great. So would a good Chinese place that delivered.

A Le Pichet/ Cafe Presse clone — good, cheap French food.

More outdoor dining.

Another bar, like Linda's, the Hideout or the Bus Stop (maybe under the cinema?)

An art supply store would be good. An Apple store would be better.

Is there Pilates in the hood?

A comic book store? I don't think there is one in the South End…

Sustainable fashion? Clothes shops in general… the neighborhood could support more boutiques beyond the excellent Andalus.

A neighborhood credit union?

A big supermarket?

A hospital or at least neighborhood clinic?

A branch of Elliott Bay/ 3rd Place? A new book store would be great alongside the used book store.

Outdoor gear? An REI, Patagonia or Nau? Or a Second Ascent branch?

A coffee shop (in addition to the Starbucks and closer than the new Vita) on Rainier with big tables, wifi, good coffee and vegetarian food. And that stays open late for non-booze socializing

A home goods shop with a green angle.

More art galleries.

We need a sporting goods store that sells fishing licenses, trailhead parking permits, and fishing equipment.

We need to get rid of McDonald's, since it seems to be the source of maybe half of Columbia City's trash.

We need fewer private nightclubs and more public nightclubs on Rainier Ave.

We need more police chasing crack dealers on Rainier Ave.

We need a farmer's market that runs through the winter months, since people eat year-round.

Too long to walk to PCC's or Safeway.

This has the makings of Columbia Citizens’ first-ever anonymous wiki-skirmish. Two Citizen regulars — .183 and .59 — have a history of interesting neighborhood posts, with the promise of many more to come.

National politics is off-topic in this thread, clearly. Elsewhere — not so clear. I’d prefer that Columbia Citizens maintain a purely neighborhood focus, and I think many Citizens share that preference. But the openness of the wiki makes our opinion just that — a preference.

My bigger concern is tone. Columbia Citizens has these groundrules:

There aren’t many. Mostly, they’re the same norms that make for good neighbors:

  • Respect — allow for privacy and differences of opinion,
  • Neighborliness — please pay attention to the tone and content of your edits,
  • Communication — work out conflicts, assume good faith, and remember that often there’s no substitute for connecting in person.

.183, here are a couple options. One — you could let the comment and the discussion rest (my preference). Two — you could cut the latter half of your post and paste it into its own separate thread. A third (and least-preferred) option is to respond, which might ratchet up the wiki-volume.

.59, if you're offended by anything you read here, please assume good intentions. Or assume you’re talking to your next-door neighbor (because you might be).

For my part, it feels unneighborly to be referring to Citizens by their ISP numbers. Anonymous posts are OK, but I encourage Citizens to self-identify using their first names. Or at least sign on with your chosen internet handles.

Columbia Citizens has the allure of a public conversation and the anonymity of the internet, but it's in the context of a neighborhood. I encourage restraint — especially today, when we've got a spike in readership, courtesy of the Stranger. We’ve got something special here: an uncommon neighborhood wiki focused on an uncommonly neighborly place.

Also, I recommend following Robert's Rules of Order (parliamentary procedure for meeting conduct), which says personal attacks and questioning another's intent are banned from meetings.

There is much tried-and-true wisdom in parliamentary procedure. Toastmasters International teaches this for a reason.

A Trader Joe's

Some sort of Fred Meyer / Target store

Art's & Crafts

Coffee Shops open 24 hours/or to 11pm.

These are the stores I often have to travel far outside of the neighborhood to access.

Reading that site made me ask myself many questions around the topic of this forum post, actually.

In thinking about what's important to me about the new development that's happening, I agree with a lot of what .127 (sorry Scott, numbers are sticking!) says here. But what I also want (and what makes this relevant to this topic) is some kind of local development covenant that prohibits large chain stores from leasing retail space.

I think it's a bummer that we have Starbucks and Subway here — which you can find in any other neighborhood. What makes CC unique and wonderful is the bakery, Lottie's, Roy's, Bob's Meats, Parcel & Post, Sweet Pea's, Awash, etc. I'd hate for the new big buildings to be filled with cookie cutter retail.

What defines a chain? Tutta Bella is a chain now, but I'd hate to kick them out. Bank of America is a chain, for sure, but I think a neighborhood credit union is a near impossible hope.

How might something like this be negotiated with or imposed on the developers?

i don't like chains either, but before you bash subway over tutta bella, please remember that they are family owned franchises. i know a family that owns a subway (not the one here in CC) and i will never bash chain stores again without thinking of them and the fact that owning that store made it possible for them to build a life here after suffering persecution in their home country.

Starbucks - "which you can find in any other neighborhood" - is here because Magic Johnson partnered with Starbucks in 1998 to open coffee shops in "underserved, inner city neighborhoods" like ours. Columbia City had Lottie Mott's, but I think that many in the 'hood welcomed Starbucks as aspirational symbol. Bummer for them!

Some of the things folks have called for are here, or at least relatively near:

Thai restaurants—there have to be several in the ID, if not along Rainier, yes?
Vietnamese restaurants will sometimes have pad thai, at least, and there are
several of them on Rainier within a mile north of CC.

(Since I'm thinking about it, the new Vietnamese/Chinese place at Rainier and
?Walden?, across from the old Chubby and Tubby site, has great inexpensive banh mi
at lunch, sandwich and soda for $2!)

I think there's Pilates in Mount Baker, across from the park, in the same building as Mio Posto
on McClellan.

Credit union—there's one on the street level at the big Dakota complex. There's also a credit
union (with FREE DRIVE THROUGH ATM!!) up by the VA. Turn off Columbian toward the VA, it's
about 100 yards from Columbian on the right.

And seafood market—the great granddaddy of them all, Mutual Fish, is a little ways north of the QFC
on Rainier.

The ATM near the VA hospital is a branch of Verity Credit Union. It's located in the parking lot of the VA hospital. From Columbian Way you'll want to turn in at the main entrance to the VA (where they've just put up the new signs) — it's the first light after Beacon Ave if you're coming from C-City. Once you've made the turn, the CU is more or less directly in front of you maybe a block up. You can't really miss it.

The address is 1660 S Columbian Way. Here's a map, if you want more specific directions.

By the way, Verity's ATM locator says that they also have a surcharge-free ATM at a Texaco station at 6600 MLK (a few blocks south of Graham Street), for those looking for cash a bit further south.

Update: After doing some drive-by reconnaissance, it turns out the "Texaco" listed on the Verity site is now a Shell station (and has been for several years). It's located on the east side of MLK. I didn't stop to confirm the existance of the ATM.

While we're at it:

Another live music venue. Perhaps even a musical instrument store, with practice rooms and lessons?

A tool library.

More Flex Car stands.

A Korean BBQ place, with good Bi Bim Bap. (Mmmm…)

A better Pho place — they're nice people, but their broth isn't very good.

Another Sunday brunch place, now that the lines are getting long.

Sushi, again. Please!

Also, more P-Patches.

What else?

A reasonably priced grocery store! Please!!! Not a Trader Joe's and not a PCC. Something like New Seasons in Portland. Where you can get your fancy organic produce if you like but they also have your standard issue marshmallows etc. A great location would be to replace that store?? that provides the parking lot for the farmer's market. What is that place? :)

@Anon .142 ->

I assume that "that place" you are referring to is the Columbia Plaza site, which is slated to be developed into retail/housing within the next year or two. A full discussion of the plans for this plot can be found here. According to the notes of one community meeting the developers are envisioning some sort of "boutique grocery" for the site.

I believe there have also been suggestions that the Saint Gobain development at Rainier and Hudson might include a grocery of some sort.

In a (marginally) interesting side-note, the Columbia Plaza was originally a grocery when it opened in 1957.

For all the folks looking for sushi in C-City, I can recommend Maki & Yaki which is located a few blocks away from the downtown core in the Rainier Vista development (which is still technically C-City). They offer sushi (mostly rolls) and teriyaki for dine-in or take-out. The owner's are super friendly and the food is quite good. For more info and a link to a menu see the Takeout Breakout.

The Times' Nancy Leson says Wabi-Sabi will open on Wednesday:

Thoa Nguyen

Thoa (pronounced "Twah") called Columbia City home for more than a decade, and as she prepares for Wabi-Sabi's opening day, she's excited to be back in the neighborhood — especially now that the neighborhood's become a hot-spot for eating and drinking. "This has been in the works for six months," she said of the restaurant built in the husk of a former daycare center "right next door to Roy's BBQ and across the street from Tutta Bella and the Columbia Ale House."

The name Wabi-Sabi, cutsie though it may sound, references a Japanese aesthetic — one said to find beauty in nature, simplicity and even imperfection. Exposed brick walls, cement floors painted to resemble sea colors, and benches and booths designed by Seattle artist Michael Fujii were built to look "very natural, very soothing, very Zen," Thoa says.

The rest of Nancy's post is here.

Wabi-Sabi: Sushi in the neighborhood

Hurray! Thanks for that news about Wabi-Sabi, Scott. I'll definitely try to get there this week.
I am betting that Anonymous who posted way back in November 2007 about wanting a sushi restaurant in the neighborhood is really happy, too.

Wabi-Sabi had a rough opening night, and Publicola's food critic ain't too happy about it.

The rest of the meal went from bad to worse to laughable. It took nearly two hours for our sushi to arrive, during which our waiter assured us repeatedly that the sushi chef was “working on it.” I should’ve known that wasn’t true when I saw the pile of abandoned order tickets on the floor (and the half-dozen folks around us who simply gave up and left), but I tried to hold out hope.

That was the first hour…

Itai!!

That's Japanese for "Ouch".

The sushi was OK and the service was horrible. I was suprised that the rolls were so small and so expensive. I hope that after the first week the menu and prices are adjusted and new staff hired. I did see the new sign posted next door that says a Thai place is coming! That's something to look forward to.

We had a great experience opening night. Two different maki rolls were tasty and unique; kids bento box excellent. I've been to Japan several times [and eat a lot of Asian food in our city] so my bar is high.

Service was equally good for an opening night; usually these don't go well but they nailed it.

We went opening night about 6:00 and had a great experience. Sashimi dinner was terrific. Service was good. Paid what I expect to pay for a dinner out — $80 included two appetizers, one shared entree and premium sake, including tax and tip.

I'd love to see:

Sushi - ala Maneki (Maki & Yaki is okay, but everything is packed in 3 lbs of plastic).

Burger Joint - like Red Mill - I know they are technically a "chain" but love 'em all the same.

Kid-centric coffee shop - I think the new Soltice owners missed out big not turning that place into another "My Coffeehouse" or "Tuogo" - Columbia City is packed with new families.

Also - re: credit union - there is a credit union just North of Safeway (on Rainier) in the "new-ish" six story retail/apartment complex. My neighbor banks there and loves it.

If you haven't already, I would recommend trying the burger at Roy's BBQ. Obviously you won't find the breadth of choices at Red Mill, but they put out quite a tasty sandwich IMHO.

This is a branch of Seattle Metropolitan Credit Union — I am also quite satisfied with this CU.

Columbia City could really use a little bodega that's a step above Shola or the busy bee. Also a cobbler - I miss the cobbler that used to be in the Ferdinand Building- the little office supply store too.

Hey, Red Mill isn't a chain. There are only two locations and both stores are owned by the owners, not licensed.

Restaurants — Sushi. Burgers. Indian. Thai.
Retail — Music (Sonic Boom or Easy Street). PCC or a small grocery or True Value hardware.

Votes for:
• Late-nite coffee shop for non-alcoholic gatherings like writers groups (would be happy to see it kid-friendly during daytime hours, but more adult-friendly at night).
• Knitting/Sewing shop with quality stuff (not like JoAnn's) and classes—esp. for teens.
• No more restaurants, please. We can't afford to eat out much, but I do love to shop in CC when I need gift items (hooray Andaluz and Retro Kids).
• Quality consignment store for women (I know the last one failed, but I think more people are cost-conscious now). Maybe a retro store would draw from outside the neighborhood.
• Garden store that specialized in native and different plants (not the stuff Fred Meyer/Lowe's carries). City Peoples would be great.

Kids or not? Both!

I think part of the point about wanting a coffee shop that's kid-hostile (kidding! um, adult-focused) is that more and more people work from home or telecommute or whatever, and having a public space that's chill enough to do that, maybe with meeting space or big tables, with good coffee and wifi and all is a real asset.

But yep, we also have a herd of little kids in the hood, so a kid-friendly place would be good, too.

What about a co-working pad, like
http://www.giraffelabs.com/
or
http://www.officenomads.com/

but attached to a cafe that serves everyone?

or maybe even add childcare and really make everyone really happy!
like
http://www.cubesandcrayons.com/
or
http://www.springwise.com/lifestyle_leisure/being_spaces_for_writers_and_p/

(an aside: does anyone remember the speakeasy cafe?)

Co-working
I love the idea of a working space with child care as well! I am a graduate student and often work at Cafe Vita. I'm also a mom of a 1-year-old and would like to be able to take him with me occasionally when his usual care is unavailable.

Ice Cream
One thing I didn't see mentioned was an ice cream shop. We used to live in Madison Valley and would walk all the way down to Madison Park during the summer for ice cream at Scoop du Jour. They also sell sandwhiches and espresso, so they have a year-round buisness.

NY Deli
Another wish would be a New York style Jewish deli. I don't think that there's a really good deli anywhere in Seattle.

I'd like to see a little more hip-hop clothing.
More ethnic based businesses.
A place for kids to explore graffiti as an art form.
More youth based businesses to compliment the incoming Boy's and Girls Club.
More social services for families.
Enhancement of Columbia Park with grills or a bread oven some tables benches and a play area.
A community center that can house some of the existing resources that will be displaced or lost by increased commercial property values as a result from the two new huge multifamily buildings going in at Columbia Plaza and St. Gobain.

What I don't want to see is another grocery store. No Trader Joe's. We have PCC and the farmers market if you want to buy local organic food. There is the Vietwah on MLK. Seattle's Supermarket on top of Beacon at Columbia next to two great produce stands and down the street from a family selling produce from WA farms (near the VA). And, if you absolutely need inexpensive organic it can be found at 2 Safeways. There's a Red Apple not far on Beacon Hill. I'd say we are pretty lucky for food options.

I vote for no more hip hop clothing and graffiti and social services. Already plenty of each available, and two of the three are completely unneeded if not outright deleterious. I guess we don't really have to worry about that though, since there is no way somebody pays 6 million dollars for a property and then puts in a hip hip clothing store.

Nightlife! I recently bought a house and still find myself traveling north to cap hill when I want to go out on the town. Hopefully light rail will bring density. And all those new faces will need somewhere to drink, no? We also need a good record store and comic shop. But I'm not holding my breath.

It's encouraging to see so many wishes being fulfilled since this thread was birthed: independent coffee shop, ice cream, sushi, thai food, women's consignment clothes.

My two cents:

  • Cobbler
  • A small but well curated International/Cultural Magazine Shop (could partner with Empire Espresso perhaps? a la Cafe Presse)
  • Vintage/Consignment Furniture Shop - with the discernment of the good folk running GATHER. Something similar to The House in Interbay or Space Oddity in Ballard.
  • Men's clothing
  • A simple but overachieving Sandwich & Soup shop. Fresh. Seasonal. With Columbia City Bakery's delicious breads.
  • Garden Shop / Nursery … a Swansons / City Peoples for the southside.
  • Small Indoor/Outdoor Swimming Pool where all the school portables are.
  • I would have said a cheaper pizza by the slice shop, but Tutta Bella's happy hour $6 margarita pizza is working just fine now (and my wife has mastered pizza dough).
  • Cheese shop
  • Northern European food importer (preferably with some Dutch treats). I had to go to Poulsbo last December to get proper Sinterklaas (Saint Nicholas) chocolates and cookies.
  • Straight Vegetarian Restaurant.
  • And I do like the idea of a kid-friendly cafe. Little Nest in Vancouver BC was great with ample space for kids to play (can't find photos that do it justice - these will have to do: one, two).

"Garden Shop / Nursery … a Swansons / City Peoples for the southside."

That would be really useful indeed.

More nightlife options wouldn't hurt: seems to be the demand…

A credit union actually IN the neighborhood would be great. Unless you're driving (and we have a high concentration of car-free households), something north of Safeway doesn't do any good.

Older ideas:
"More outdoor dining…. An art supply store would be good. An Apple store would be better. …A comic book store? I don't think there is one in the South End… A hospital or at least neighborhood clinic?"
"would love to see more coworking spaces in the city - especially ones that managed to pair up daycare with coworking."
"Columbia City could really use a little bodega that's a step above Shola or the busy bee."
"Another live music venue. Perhaps even a musical instrument store, with practice rooms and lessons? A tool library. More Flex Car stands. A Korean BBQ place, with good Bi Bim Bap. (Mmmm…) A better Pho place"
Also still good ideas.
