Do you like kids? Want to work outside, creating a fun and educational environment for children and youth who access free meals throughout the summer?
United Way of King County is seeking Fuel Your Future Summer Meals members to be a part of a team to end childhood hunger in King County. We are seeking full time members to be a part of United Way's Summer Meals Program, a program to help children and teens access healthy meals during the summer.
You will be assigned to one or more Summer Meals sites, where you will use the skills and experiences you have to make sure kids have a safe, fun and engaging environment. You will plan and lead activities, serve meals, and conduct grassroots community outreach to get the word out. As a part of a federal program, you will ensure that the policies and procedures are followed, meals are accurately counted, and meals are prepared correctly. You will gain experience working directly with the community and in support of a respected and influential nonprofit. Training will be provided in site management, marketing, youth engagement and data tracking – hard skills that will make your summer work influential on your resume.
Qualifications:
- Self-starters who are passionate about improving their community and public service.
- Experience working with and actively engaging with children.
- High-energy, outgoing personality willing to recruit kids and talk to adults about summer meals and site activities
- Strong verbal communication and can effectively promote the Summer Meals program to parents, kids and other community members.
- A willingness to be flexible and do whatever it takes to feed hungry kids.
- Ability to create a fun environment while following the federal guidelines of the Summer Meals program.
- Creativity when it comes to working with kids and getting the word out about the Summer Meals program.
- Staying organized in hectic environments.
- Access to reliable transportation to the site(s) you’re assigned to—especially in areas of high need in South King County (Auburn, Federal Way, Des Moines, Kent, SeaTac, Renton, South Seattle)
Mandatory Requirements:
- Must be at least 18 years of age.
- Must be a U.S. citizen, national, or legal permanent resident alien of the United States.
- Must be available 40 hours a week for five days a week. This position lasts 10 weeks, from June 21st, 2017 to August 29th 2017.
- Must be available for a mandatory three-day training.
- Cannot miss more than two days of the entire term of service. No exceptions can be made.
- Must go through a Washington State Patrol background check and National Sex Offender Registry check.
Benefits and Compensation:
- Living allowance of $1,222 per month, pre-tax
- Eligibility to receive $1,194.71 Segal AmeriCorps Education Award or a cash stipend ($230-287) after successful completion of the summer.
- Public transportation pass to and from your site (ORCA).
- School credit available, must be arranged by individual.
- Receive your food handler’s permit.
- Become part of the AmeriCorps Network and a part of a high impact team.
