My neighbors just got home from a long day at church and found their home had been broken into and all of their valuables stolen. This happened in the middle of the day…someone had to see something. 3500 block of Hudson, Sunday 6/14, sometime in the afternoon. If you know anything, please contact the police…these are really good people.

…All you folks on the west side of Rainier (and I guess all of CC)…what's the word on getting a neighborhood watch going? Do we already have one? If not, anyone know how to get the ball rolling? I can't imagine the current crime rate getting any better this summer…after today, it seems like now is especially a good time to get organized.

Groups that may deal with local safety issues include the Southeast District Council, Columbia City Business Assn, and Hillman City Business Assn.

Marj Raunig's list is a good one. She's focused it to a specific area, but I can't remember the boundaries offhand.

If email groups cover certain areas, maybe we should map them out. In Marj's case, we could be specific. If others aren't so specific, we could draw generalized shapes.

Sounds like a great wiki-project.

The approach that Marj Raunig has taken with her list — "focusing it to a specific area," as you say — gives off a distinct vibe of being exclusive rather than inclusive. It's not just a vibe, either. She does exclude some Columbia City residents from her list and there is no obvious recourse.

For that reason I cannot in good conscience recommend it.

But I may well be mistaken. And would like to be convinced that I am mistaken.

Actually, Scott, last year I created a very nice online map of various Columbia City groups' boundaries, fiefdoms and moats, all layered on top of a single map. It's really very revealing.

But distribution of my map is "focused to specific areas." You may or may not be qualified to see it.

I would be interested in getting a neighborhood watch together as well. Our house was burglarized about a month ago on the 3700 block of Dawson. A neighbor around the corner was as well just two days later. In our case, based on an eyewitness, the culprits were teenagers. I think a neighborhood watch might be a good step in trying to deter further incidents.
