Let's take responsibility for generating a lot of ideas in this half-day conference. We'll probably surprise ourselves with what we come up with.
- There are lots of empty buildings along Rainier Avenue. Don't you think their owners would love to have someone in them doing something productive? Paying rent?
- There are lots of resources in the community that are underused. Talented people are without work. Let's put those people to work doing something they'd enjoy, providing service to the community. Let's create some jobs!
- There are initiatives that other communities have taken that might work here. Let's discuss them.
Rainier Valley Rotary Club will take responsibility for renting the space at Rainier Community Center: 4600 38th Ave. S - from Noon til 5 p.m on April 18.
THE OPEN MEETING PROCESS
The conference is the sum of all of our ideas. There are no "experts" to tell us what works. Several discussion leaders will present a topic and people kick in their ideas, ask questions. A recorder collects that info and we will publish each of the discussions online. Want to start a community currency like Ithaca, NY? Want to start a Teen Business Incubator? Want more community gardens? Want to start a small-business micro-loans program? You be the discussion leader. We will run 6 discussion sessions (minimum) during the program.
PLEASE ALERT YOUR FRIENDS WHO WOULD ENJOY JOINING YOU FOR THIS CONFERENCE.

Rainier Valley Economic Bootstrapping Conference
Summary:
At a meeting of the Rainier Valley Rotary in February the program turned into an open discussion of the local economy. Why are there so many business buildings on Rainier Avenue that are closed, empty, boarded up? The suggestion that we do something about it turned into this conference. Let's get the community together and discuss and chew on some practical ideas to generate a more healthy local economy. "Prosperity Begins At Home."
