I was disappointed today to find that my bike, which I've regularly been leaving parked at the Columbia City Light Rail station while I am at work, was stolen from there today. I left it parked there until almost 10:00 p.m. (later than usual) and when I went to retrieve it, it was gone. It was locked with a Kryptonite U-Lock.

Two questions:
1) Have many other people had bikes stolen here?
2) Have you seen a very large Trek mountain bike (grey with red trim)?

A friend of mine is running a tree give away program through the city of Seattle. This year they are giving trees to target neighborhoods in south seattle (georgetown, beacon hill, columbia city, etc…). each household can receive up to four trees, and they do not have to go by the curb… they can go anywhere on the property. This is a great opportunity to get some free trees for yourselves and for your neighbors.

More information on the program can be found at http://seattle.gov/trees/treesforneighborhoods.htm

One of the options is an Italian plum tree.

Reasons why trees are cool and we should promote this program:
Trees make our space more pleasant
Trees help to clean our air
Trees reduce the urban heat island effect
Trees help to clean puget sound by reducing storm water runoff.

We no longer have any grass left so you can have it for $40 rather than $45, if you mention that you saw it in the CC wiki. :-) Really!

It has been used carefully and stored in the garage.

This is the kind of mower that is the "push" type: it never needs any gas and just makes quiet clipping noises.

Hi there! Just wanted to share our experience yesterday at Asa Mercer Middle School! Pictures can be found on our Facebook page, and a video on YouTube. It was really great to see all of those people volunteering to make a difference in the local community. I've attached the content of the blog post so you know what we were up to:

We can’t believe that August is almost over. For some this means football season is about to kick-off, and for others that ski season is around the corner. If you are a kid you have one thing on your mind: summer vacation is over and school is about to start back up.

When students return to Asa Mercer Middle School in Seattle’s Beacon Hill Neighborhood things might look a little bit different than it did on that memorable day last Spring when they embarked on their Summer break. That is because yesterday over 100 Clearwire employees took some time away from the office to help revitalize the school grounds. Murals were painted, flowers were planted, and benches were constructed.

Each of Asa Mercer Middle School’s 850 students will also receive a new backpack on the first day of school. These backpacks and other school supplies were donated through a supply drive for which Clearwire employees raised over $5,000. 34 Lenovo laptops were also given to the school that will help fill the space in the school’s new mobile computer lab.

“Students will be wowed when they learn that they can take a laptop from the library to the classroom,” said Principal Andhra Lutz.

Clearwire wishes to thank all of the employees who contributed to today’s event. You guys and gals rock!

This event is part of Clearwire’s Connecting With Communities program which aims to improve communities across the US. If you have any questions about the program please contact Michael Nank at michael.nank[at]clearwire.com.

Hi - I love animals, but letting dogs off leash in Columbia Park has to stop. I know you think that your dog won't hurt anyone, but you have no way of knowing that. Today two dogs that were running off leash with their owner nearby attacked my cat who was just laying in the yard. He is injured and hiding where I can't get to him and I am distraught. If you know there is a dog park nearby and you know that having your dog off leash is illegal, why do you do it? I love dogs, but please, please, please stop letting your dogs off leash and take them to the dog park where they can be dogs and not hurt anyone or anycat. This is to all the people who let their dogs off leash, not just the woman with the German Shepard and other big brown dog who ran away cowardly after I told her that her dogs attacked my cat. Shame on you.

Women’s Funding Alliance Awards Grants to Local Organizations Focusing on Women and Girls

Women’s Funding Alliance awarded $357,500 to 21 Washington state organizations that provide political, economic and social opportunities for women and girls, including three based in COLUMIBA CITY: Latinos for Community Transformation, Pinay sa Seattle and Refugee Women's Alliance. The grants bring the total community contribution of WFA to more than $5.5 million since the foundation’s inception.

The 21 organizations were selected from 113 applicants requesting more than $1.3 million in funding. An additional 17 groups were selected as beneficiaries of WFA’s workplace giving funds, and another three are recipients of WFA’s Leah C. McCollough Legacy Fund. Total foundation giving for its 10-11 fiscal year is expected to exceed $600,000.

During its 09-10 fiscal year, WFA granted nearly $600,000 to local groups, benefiting 170,000+ women and girls. Its goal is to invest half of its granting into efforts that increase the economic well-being of underemployed women and girls in Washington.

Women’s Funding Alliance (WFA) has awarded $357,500 to 21 Washington state organizations focused on providing political, economic and social opportunities for women and girls, including three based in COLUMIBA CITY: Latinos for Community Transformation, Pinay sa Seattle and Refugee Women's Alliance.

The grants, ranging from $2,000 to $25,000, bring the total community contribution of WFA to more than $5.5 million since the foundation’s inception.

The 21 beneficiary organizations were selected amongst a pool of 113 applicants requesting more than $1.3 million in funding. Grants were awarded in five primary funding areas: civic participation and leadership, education, health and well-being, safety and violence, and economic opportunity. An additional 17 groups were selected as beneficiaries of WFA’s workplace giving funds, and another three were announced in early 2010 as recipients of WFA’s Leah C. McCollough Legacy Fund. Total foundation giving for its 09-10 fiscal year is expected to exceed $600,000.

“It’s our vision to create a world where women are safe, healthy and empowered,” said LeAnne Moss, executive director of Women’s Funding Alliance. “WFA is leading the charge by not only funding groups that are often overlooked and underfunded, but also by acting as a catalyst for long-term social change by challenging organizations and governments to look at issues through the gender lens.”

REAL, LOCAL IMPACT
Women’s Funding Alliance invested nearly $600,000 in Washington state organizations during its 09-10 fiscal year, while benefiting more than 170,000 women and girls in the Puget Sound region during that same period. Its goal over the next five years is to invest at least half of its granting into efforts that increase the overall economic well-being of low-income and underemployed women and girls, particularly single heads of households and females from marginalized communities.

Washington Women’s Employment & Education (WWEE) is one recipient of WFA’s economic opportunity funding: “WFA funding has had a significant impact on our programs,” said Robin Lester, executive director of WWEE. “It allows us to leverage resources through partnerships and financial contributions from organizations that understand and respect that funding from WFA is both a sign of the success of a program and symbol of our organization’s commitment to enhancing the position of women in our community.”

WFA Economic Opportunity Grants fund operating or project support in four priority areas: creating better jobs, building entrepreneurship, increasing assets and financial literacy, and public policy reform. The 2010 Economic Opportunity grantees are:

• Economic Opportunity Institute – Seattle (Wallingford)
• Enterprise for Equity – Olympia
• Latinos for Community Transformation – Seattle (Rainier Valley / Columbia City)
• Legal Voice – Seattle (Central Business District)
• Nonprofit Assistance Center – Seattle (Central District)
• Northwest Health Law Advocates – Seattle (University District)
• Northwest Indian College – Bellingham
• Parents Organizing for Welfare and Economic Rights – Olympia
• Powerful Voices – Seattle (Capitol Hill)
• Washington Community Alliance for Self Help (CASH) – Seattle (Central District)
• Washington State Coalition Against Domestic Violence – Seattle (Central Business District)
• Washington Women’s Employment & Education – Tacoma
• Women in Transition – Kenmore

WFA Community Response Grants address civic participation and leadership, education, health and well-being, and safety and violence. The 2010 Community Response grantees are:

• Church of Mary Magdalene – Seattle (South Lake Union)
• Domestic Violence & Sexual Assault Services of Whatcom County – Bellingham
• Family Planning of Clallam County – Port Angeles
• King County Coalition Against Domestic Violence – Seattle (Central District)
• Legal Voice – Seattle (Central Business District)
• Nonprofit Assistance Center – Seattle (Central District)
• Northwest Indian College Cooperative Extension Office – Bellingham
• Residential Recovery Program for Prostituted Children – Seattle (Pioneer Square_
• Seattle Counseling Service – Seattle (Capitol Hill)
• YWCA Pierce County – Tacoma

WFA facilitates a giving circle, the Ripple Fund, in which individuals contribute $5,000 to fund specific organizations. The 2010 Ripple Fund grantees are:

• Hilltop Artists – Tacoma
• If Project (Seattle Police Foundation) – Seattle (Central Business District)
• The Power of Hope – Seattle (West Seattle)

WFA had previously announced its Leah C. McCollough Legacy Fund grantees, which focuses on building the leadership and capacity of non-profit organizations serving women and girls. They are: Pinay sa Seattle-GABRIELA USA – Seattle (Columbia City); The Sophia Way – Bellevue; and Tierra Madre Fund – Seattle.

WFA also partners with regionally based employers through their workplace giving campaigns and allocates Unrestricted Operating Grants to the following organizations:

• Abused Deaf Women's Advocacy Services – Seattle (Northgate/Maple Leaf)
• BABES Network-YWCA – Seattle (Central Business District)
• Breast Cancer Resource Center – Tacoma
• Chaya – Seattle
• Citrine Health – Everett
• FaithTrust Institute – Seattle (Wallingford)
• Family Planning of Clallam County – Port Angeles
• Harborview Sexual Assault & Traumatic Stress – Seattle (University District)
• Intercommunity Mercy Housing – Seattle (Belltown)
• Jubilee Women's Center – Seattle (Capitol Hill)
• King County Coalition Against Domestic Violence – Seattle (Central District)
• King County Sexual Assault Resource Center – Renton
• Legal Voice – Seattle (Central Business District)
• Northwest Indian College – Bellingham
• Passages Northwest – Seattle (Central District)
• Planned Parenthood of the Great Northwest – Seattle (Central District)
• Powerful Voices – Seattle (Capitol Hill)
• Real Change – Seattle (Pioneer Square)
• Refugee Women's Alliance – Seattle (Columbia City)
• Residence XII – Kirkland
• Seattle Girls' School – Seattle (Central District)
• Washington Community Alliance for Self Help (CASH) – Seattle (Central District)
• Washington State NARAL Foundation – Seattle (Central Business District)
• Women's Housing Equality and Enhancement League (WHEEL) – Seattle (Pike Market)

ABOUT WOMEN’S FUNDING ALLIANCE
Women’s Funding Alliance envisions a world where all women and girls are thriving in a just and equitable society, and have the resources and opportunities to reach their full potential. Established in 1983, Women’s Funding Alliance promotes justice, health and opportunities by investing in the future of women and girls in Washington state. By strategically supporting marginalized and underfunded groups that promote progressive change for women and girls, WFA seeks to have a dramatic impact on the increased ability of these groups to serve the community.
Big Brothers Big Sisters of Puget Sound, a donor-supported mentoring
organization with programs in King County, is looking for male volunteers to be Big Brothers. Volunteers meet with a child in school or on the weekends to play games, do homework, see movies, visit a zoo or museum or just hang out. Children in our programs are kids who could greatly benefit from additional adult guidance. Children are referred to the program for many reasons, and many children come from homes where quality adult attention is limited by single-parenthood or transitional housing, including foster care. Whatever the circumstances, these children need an adult in their lives who is caring, consistent, knows how to listen and can be a good role model. We especially need male volunteers for our many waiting boys. Research shows our programs are working: compared to their non-mentored peers, Little Brothers and Little Sisters are less likely to use violence to solve problems, become more trusting of their parent or guardian, resist substance abuse and improved school attendance.

To inquire, please visit www.bbbsps.org or call 1-877-700-BIGS.

I love my beer at Lotties but I can't eat much on the menu because it is heavily wheat-based. As a wheat and egg-free person, I'd like to see some options that appeal to a wide variety of diners and cater to those of us who can't eat regular pizzas or sandwiches, etc. I am chock full of delicious ideas, so let me know if you want me to contact you!

Public radio is my mainstay for news from the world beyond Columbia City. This week there's been some overlap between their news and ours.

Chris Joyner is the kombucha guy at the farmers market, and he's a recently transplanted Columbia Citizen. Yesterday KUOW had a feature about his business, which until recently had avoided the widespread kombucha ban.

And today, Morning Edition interviewed Frank Fairfield, a roots banjoist who'll play at the Columbia City Theater this weekend.

I'm helping someone who hasn't been behind the wheel in quite a few years, still has a license, and just needs to brush up on their skills. Can anyone suggest some large lots nearby that are relatively empty during the day on weekends? This would be for general driving/parking practice before tackling local roads again. Thanks!

I haven't had any recent conversations about what's in store for Columbia School.

Last I heard, Torah Day School had applied to the District to move into Columbia School. Then the South Shore School (the New School) moved back into their temporary home ('07-09) while the District figured out what in their new Rainier Beach building has made people sick. Assuming the health concern is resolved, Columbia should be available again in the fall. I think the District’s RFP (Request for Proposals) originally stated the site would be available for a three-year lease.

Right now (July 2010), the District's site says this:

The Columbia School lease is on hold pending a decision on reoccupancy of South Shore School.

Meanwhile, TDS is hiring, though "Columbia City" could refer to their current or proposed locations. I think TDS' proposal includes other neighborhood-based organizations, so other Citizens are definitely more in the know about this.

I also know very little about TDS, and their website is pretty sparse. Here's some of what other people in the Jewish community have written about the new and growing school:

Learning curve: The success and failure of two schools in Seward Park

The Seattle Kollel: Case Study in Unintended Consequences
