Shamah, are shutting down the venue for at least three months for renovations and many of the acts scheduled to play there—including the popular monthly cabaret by Tamara the Trapeze Lady—are scrambling to find new homes.

"We're trying to help them out," said Shamah. He indicated that the theater was having major financial trouble: "Let's just say this," he said. "The gas to the theater got turned off. The water got turned off today. They didn't have a dumpster—apparently the garbage just disappeared to some garbage heaven. I wish I knew where that was."

Shamah said he and Sur just want to "bring some good music and good vibes to South Seattle." Some regular acts, like Tamara's, will return after the renovation.

There are more details in the comments under Brendan's post.

This post by Dan Bertolet got me thinking of all the development headed our way:

http://www.publicola.net/2010/02/13/where-did-this-nice-little-urban-pocket-come-from/#more-26701

I love that block. Compared to most multi-family buildings, these make a street that feels like a nice place to be, and a safe place to walk and bike. This sort of pocket of compact development would improve the neighborhood, in my opinion.

What other examples do folks like?

My wonderful two-bedroom home is available for a short-term furnished rental between April 1, 2010 and July 1, 2010 while I am out of the country.

The home is conveniently located in Columbia City within an easy walk to the light rail, Lake Washington, the PCC grocery store, and all the wonderful restaurants in Columbia City. There are several bus lines close by and getting to downtown or I-90 is a snap. My home has warm oak wood floors, large windows, a full laundry room, a spacious garage, and a wonderful garden. There is a full kitchen and a fenced yard and is comfortably furnished.

I would like to find responsible, non-smoking renters (i.e., pay bills on time, keep the property clean, etc.) who will enjoy and respect the home. It would be wonderful if you liked to garden too! I will consider pets on a case-by-case basis as well as partial work-rent trade. Rent would be $1500/month.

I look forward to hearing from you!

Please contact me at 360.927.0482 or moc.liamg|yelruhneelhtakm#moc.liamg|yelruhneelhtakm for more information.

Hi all,

As a local parent and longtime Seward Park resident, I thought I'd put this information out here…

The reason for this message is simple, an Internet Safety presentation was recently done at my children’s school and I am attempting to gauge the likelihood of conducting the same presentation for other community groups (social, academic and athletic youth programs and family groups, etc). The Internet Safety experience is available to the public at no charge. I believe that the information that is provided is greatly beneficial to community members, parents, and students who attend these events especially given that more and more of us (adults and kids alike!) have integrated electronic gadgets into our lives.

If you're interested in getting more information, please feel free to respond with your contact info and I'd be glad to answer any questions you may have. Additionally, please feel free to forward this information to any community decision makers that would allow us to share this valuable information throughout our community.

Thanks,
Jen

My husband and I are going out of town in March twice and are in need of a reliable, experience pet sitter for our two cats and two dogs (6 yr old Husky mix and 1 yr old Pit Bull mix).

We'd prefer someone reliable to stay in our house and care for our pets, since the dogs specifically require a lot of management. Because of the breed of our youngest dog, we need an experienced sitter who knows how to give strong commands and likes to exercise with the dogs. Both dogs are trained and know basic commands, can walk on a leash and know their routine.

I can't emphasize enough that we need a RELIABLE and EXPERIENCED sitter. Our pets are our children and it's imperative that we get someone capable to handle them. They are sweet, wonderful pets and we're looking for someone who will enjoy taking care of them.

Does anyone have any recommendations or suggestions? Greatly appreciated!

The New Year has landed and with that the traditional New Year’s Resolution, get active or lose weight or go outside!

Many survived the holiday’s with an extra pound or two around the stomach and a rededication of getting in shape for the new year. National studies show that all 50 states became larger last year, and almost half are obese. Culprits include the ease of fast food in every neighborhood, a reduction of healthy options affordable in grocery stores and video games and television keeping us indoors.

The Beach Challenge sets to get people active in the new year, by creating a variety of opportunities to get active as well as find ways to make activities healthier! Similar programs are run at big corporations…yet there is no reason that everyone can’t take part in a healthier new year. This type of program you will see at gyms and on TV, although none will have the same local feel to them.
The biggest issue of getting motivated is often that little nudge. This program will give you the nudge and will introduce you to healthy options within your own community as well as look at health from a long term perspective. It is great for groups, friends and more. The challenge can be as much or as little as you need…resources will be abundant! Sneak preview Jan 6th from 6:10-7:10pm

As referred to in a previous post … my bicycle was stolen from the bike racks at the Columbia City light rail station yesterday (Monday, 4 Jan).

Unfortunately, I don't have a picture of the bike. The bike is a red Specialized Stump Jumper (early 90's model). Some distinguishing features (it had the last time I saw it): a rack on the back of the bicycle, a green bell pepper bell on the front handlebars, and no rear brake.

Am posting in hopes somebody might see the bike laying around the neighborhood. If so, then please post here.

Much thanks!

Tomorrow I turn 40. And I have a birthday wish.

I feel really lucky. I live with my family in a place we love, among neighbors we sure do enjoy, and who clearly have caught that same Columbia City bug.

We've got many inspiring neighborhood causes, but I'm picking one. I'm asking friends and neighbors to give a birthday donation to Bike Works.

For the last 13 years, they've empowered kids from all walks to ride like they earned it, to work on bikes and earn their own wheels through sweat equity. And that's just one of Bike Works' programs. Bikes and bike repair are their catalyst for action in environment, social justice, community, and fun.

Learn more here (that links to a no-cost donation passthrough to Bike Works, via facebook). If you prefer to donate in other ways, please let me know.

I'm not sure it's cool to broadcast a birthday wish across the neighborhood. I've gotta admit, it's unnerving even. But the coolness of having our own nonprofit bike shop in Columbia City, and the amazing things they do — that clearly tips the balance in favor of putting this once-in-a-decade wish out there.

For all that they do — and they do it with talent, humor, and gusto — please consider including Bike Works in your giving, and thank you for making my 40th that much more special.

Scott.

Press release

Othello Park Alliance announces new series of work parties in Othello Park

January 1, 2010. Seattle, WA

A new series of late winter work parties has been announced for the collaborative Othello Park Habitat Restoration project. Five scheduled work parties from January to March will give community members the chance to help steward a valuable park resource, and to serve as a positive adult role model for the youth working on the project.

Youth participants are part of King County Superior Court’s job training program. Positive civic engagement and interaction with adults in their community means a huge amount to these young folks who are looking to create a positive future vision for themselves, despite great adversity.

Work parties take place by the slide in Othello Park. Tools, gloves, and snacks provided:

o Saturday, January 16, 10 – 1 pm
o Saturday February 6, 10 – 1 pm
o Saturday February 20, 10 – 1 pm
o Saturday March 13, 10 – 1 pm
o Saturday March 27, 10 – 1 pm

During six work parties this past fall over 25 community volunteers worked alongside 10-15 youth participants of King County Superior Court’s job training program to remove invasive weeds, install erosion control jute netting, and mulch with woodchips on the slope north of the famous Othello Park slide.

This project is a partnership of the Othello Park Alliance, City of Seattle Parks and Recreation, King County Superior Court, and King County Department of Natural Resources. The project will take place during the period of October 2009 – April 2011.

The Othello Park Alliance works to assure that Othello Park’s beauty and open space is retained, enhanced, and integrated into a vibrant, multicultural, pedestrian-friendly Othello town center and residential community by coordinating community events and making capital improvements in the Park.

To RSVP for work parties or find out more about helping Othello Park Alliance with our work, please contact Katie Pencke at moc.oohay|ekcnep#moc.oohay|ekcnep.

We live in a great town. Our 'down town' area has the feel of small town America. When we first moved here earlier this year, we were amazed by the people welcoming us to the neighborhood. Business owners, joggers, walkers, kids — everybody welcomed us like they had been expecting us for a long time and alas, we'd finally arrived; and how glad they were to see us.

To add to this warm welcome, we were invited by a new friend to attend the upcoming CC brunch held on the first Sunday of each month. "What an awesome way to get to know our new friends and neighbors," we thought. And, it was. And, it is.

If you love this special Seattle community, come be a part of it. Join us for brunch. If you're feeling especially daring, sign up to host a brunch. You can do that HERE. Click on 'Edit' and add your name to the list.

We'd love to see you at our next brunch. Please take a minute from your busy life and share your thoughts.

L'Chaim!

For immediate release: December 1, 2009
Contact: Lois Maag, 206-615-0950; 206-255-7293 (mobile); vog.elttaes|gaam.siol#vog.elttaes|gaam.siol

Seattle Department of Neighborhoods announces changes to Neighborhood Matching Fund
Improvements make process simpler and easier to receive funding for community projects
First deadline coming up in January

SEATTLE – In its continuing efforts to make the Neighborhood Matching Fund (NMF) more accessible and simpler for residents, Seattle Department of Neighborhoods has made key improvements to this nationally recognized program. The Neighborhood Matching Fund Program provides cash awards to community organizations for neighborhood-based projects, and these changes not only make the structure and process easier, but reflect the changing economy. The changes take effect now for applications requesting 2010 funds.

Highlights of the changes include new electronic application forms, clearer guidelines, increased award amounts, and technical assistance workshops. The NMF website has also been revamped to make it easier to navigate and apply for the four funding categories: Large Projects Fund, Small and Simple Fund, Small Sparks Fund and Tree Fund.

Here is a more complete overview of the changes:

NMF Guidelines:
• NMF guidelines are now clearer and easier to navigate. In fact, all four funds are covered under the same document.
• The value of volunteer time has increased to $20 per hour keeping up with Independent Sector research on average volunteer time value.

Fund Changes:
• The Outreach Fund is now combined with the Small Sparks Fund, which will continue to provide support for community building projects with small funding needs, along with new flexible guidelines.

Award Amount:
• To reflect rising costs, fund request limits have increased to up to $1000 for the Small Sparks Fund and up to $20,000 for the Small and Simple Fund.

Application Forms:
• The forms are designed to be easier to use, along with simplified questions, fill-in electronic formatting, and simpler work plan and budget forms.
• Signatures documenting community match pledges are no longer required for the application.

Technical Assistance and Website:
• To increase outreach and assistance, NMF staff will hold one to two technical assistance workshops every month around the city. There are two workshops in December and three occurring in January.
• The website has been revamped to ease navigation and provide clearer information with the inclusion of a “Frequently Asked Questions” section. It also has enhanced features and links to other funding opportunities.

The deadline for Small and Simple Projects Fund is January 11, 2010 (next deadline in July) and the Large Projects Fund Letter of Intent is due February 8, 2010. For more information, visit www.seattle.gov/neighborhoods/nmf/.

The Seattle Department of Neighborhoods works to bring government closer to our residents through civic engagement, community empowerment and involvement by all residents for the betterment of their community.

This site aspires to engage neighbors in our neighborhood. So as part of this winter's site overhaul, the main idea is to bring more of the new activity and information to the front of the site where it's easier for everyone to find it and work with it.

What's happening this week? What are people talking about? Where's the latest weekly digest? How can I be a part of all this?

I'm hoping the new site will make all that much clearer. There's been a lot of under-the-hood tinkering, some breakage, occasional cursing — and a bunch of new ideas for how our site can come back stronger, easier, and more interesting.

There's a mockup on the test site — very drafty, but it gives the basic idea. Take a look. Weigh in.

This is a reminder that tomorrow, Saturday, Public Health - Seattle & King County is opening up four free H1N1 vaccine clinics to provide access to people at highest risk for H1N1 influenza (swine flu) who cannot afford to pay. One of those locations will be at the Columbia Public Health Center, 4400 37th Ave S.

Tomorrow's clinics will be open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Vaccinations are first come, first served, and no reservations will be taken.
Your local businesses need you now more than ever. Did you know that for ever dollar you spend locally, it has three times the positive impact on the local economy than that same dollar spent at a chain store? The local Columbia City Business Association has come up with some great incentives to shop locally, so you can spend your money where your home is.

We kick off the season this weekend with the annual holiday lighting. CCBA and KC's Flowers have rallied to replace the old tradition with something new: a display above KC's Flowers on the corner of S. Ferdinand and Rainier Ave. S that will light up the dark of December starting at 6 pm.

Saturday also begins a month of businesses offering reciprocal coupons: eat at Tutta Bella, for example, and get a coupon for various retailers offering specials. Buy something at Andaluz, and get a coupon for restaurants offering specials. Coupons are good from December 5 -30.

December Events
Details online

Sat | 12/5/09
Shopping Specials All Day!
RV Historical Society Open House 3 pm - 6 pm
Visit Santa at Tutta Bella from 4:00 pm - 6:00 pm
New Holiday Lighting Tradition 6 pm - 6:30pm (corner of Rainier Ave. S and S.
We’re trying to determine if there is interest in Columbia City for a co-working* opportunity?

Co-working is not a desk rental business. It’s not about the printers or the conference rooms. Co-working is about people. Co-working spaces bring together independent workers and provides them with a space in which they can work alongside one another in community.

The perfect example of this already exists in Seattle on Capitol Hill – Office Nomads. Check this out: http://www.officenomads.com/

Please let us know if you might be interested in this type of arrangement. Particularly let us know if you’d be interested in starting and working this environment in our building along Hudson.

Steve Orser

moc.seitreporprobrah|resros#moc.seitreporprobrah|resros

She said the decision came as a surprise to her and was forced on a very supportive property owner by the economy. She said the owner, HAL Real Estate Investments, had allowed the market free use of the property and was sorry to have to end the arrangement.

After the loss of a tenant for a building there, Curtis said, HAL decided to use an open area, where the market has operated, to generate revenue from monthly parking, probably from people using the Link light rail system nearby. She said that while she is sad about the move, she keeps thinking that parking to encourage transit use is "a good thing."

Curtis expressed optimism about the future, however, saying that the community in Columbia City has been very supportive and she is just beginning to explore alternatives. With 45 farmers taking part weekly and strong attendance, Curtis said, it's important to find a good space. And it's important to maintain ties to nearby businesses, which have seen good synergy from the Wednesday markets.

The Columbia City market takes the winter off, with reopening in May.
