We did meet and it looks like a blog is definitely going to happen. What it will actually look like and who will be involved is still getting sorted out.

The plan for now is to have another meeting in a week or so after we get a bit more feedback from the neighborhood and some time to put together some of the ideas we initially kicked around.

For now though, more neighborhood input and involvement is what we really need. So, let's open it up: when a new Columbia City Blog goes live, what do you want to see on it?

Chime in here and stay posted for the next interest meeting…

From the intro Scott (I think it's still Scott) gave to this week's wikli, it sounds like it may be time to revive this conversation about creating a dedicated and active Columbia City neighborhood blog.

If you are interested, chime in. My guess is that there are a number of you that are also willing to invest some time into it.

Except that it's not very active it, it's often difficult to follow, and often updates get missed because people aren't staying up to date on all the pages in the background. Rather, it's just the latest comments that get read. Also, since the comments essentially "become the front headlines," I think a lot of folks are hesitant to actually engage in discussion.

Yeah, RVP is macro, and this site is micro. I don't see what else you would need. This is exactly the spot to go for "developments, rumors, businesses, car break-ins, events, block-wide garage sales, block parties, etc."

I read it all the time…there's a ton of news about Columbia City, however, that goes overlooked—mainly little stuff: developments, rumors, businesses, car break-ins, events, block-wide garage sales, block parties, etc. Not really worthy of journalism…just small updates about the neighborhood.

I don't think those things necessarily belong on the RVP. It serves it's purpose well. The regular readers and commenters (like you) have a home and voice there, the South End is covered decently, but it's not a neighborhood blog. And, I think the new format is confusing.

Something a bit more homey to the neighborhood would be nice.

Yes, I've heard of the RVP. I read it. My problem is that I feel that most of the stuff I see is more crime related or otherwise highlights certain aspects of the area. It would be ok if it were more balanced out. There is a lot of development that happens and new businesses that you never hear about, but you'll certainly hear a lot about someone being shot. That police car photo that is attached to the crime stories is seen more than anything else.

I feel like I'm being too negative about the RVP - they do serve a purpose. But I think there is demand for content that is less focused on community safety and activism.

Agreed a local news blog would be a nice addition to the sense of community in Columbia City, but without paying someone to do it, folks go until they burn out. Journalism and capitalism do not make a great combination, so it would take an angel (or a few) and a good journalist, or a few of them without an agenda. Perhaps a community blog could be merged with a Low Power FM radio station. The FCC is opening up LPFM's to cities like Seattle in October and I would be interested in being involved in a Columbia/Hillman City LPFM and already run a Hillman City-based non-profit corp with a great deal of radio experience. If there are potential backers and partners interested in this idea, I can be reached at gro.balps|nep#gro.balps|nep and 206.422.5002. Paul Nelson

If you haven't seen the recent story in the Stranger about local news sites, it's linked at the top of this related thread. Feel free to message me on here if you'd like to talk further.

I agree. Columbia Citizens is great…but no longer really that active. One really has to know what to look for in order to find out the latest news. The occasional discussion post doesn't quite allow the latest news, events, opportunities, announcements, etc. to really be front and center, readable, and easily accessible.

Something that reads like a blog, is browse-able, with multiple contributors from the neighborhood would be great. I think it would also lead to a whole lot more discussion/comments.

I'm all for it.

First off, I sincerely mean to offense to the existing efforts that are underway out there. I subscribe to all of them. Some seem more focused on crime activities, others seem more long-form article with less frequent posts. Columbiacitizens feels like more of an insiders discussion space. All of which are great, but I feel like we should have something more akin to the Capitol Hill Blog or the Central District Blog.

I love seeing posts regarding new businesses opening up, with someone taking the time to get inside and get photos of what's happening. Something that offers up to the rest of the city what's happening down here. I want to see more of that and I want others to see it too.

This of course would take a number of folks out there watching and reporting on our awesome and often overlooked part of the city.

Are there any other people out there feeling the same way? Thoughts?
