As long as the trails usage is light, I doubt there will be much conflict or damage to the park. But as the population increases, mountain biker usage increases, and 200,000 more Seattle residents start looking for places that are green. Then the impacts will be felt. User group conflicts will escalate as they have in other parts of the country and BC, and more sports uses will be introduced (if mountain biking, why not Frisbee golf, laser tag, paint ball, a ropes course, obstacle courses?)
As more sports activity and mt bike trails are added, the environment will start to show wear and tear, losing wildlife diversity, causing more slides, ruts, compaction, etc.

Mostly it will change the essential nature of the natural park space. The birds, the seniors, those seeking solace and the peace of the woods will be aced out by all the activity. That's fine if that is what Seattle really wants to do with it's native areas. It would be a shame though. My feeling is that when user/population pressures are high, the land must, by default, be restricted to the lightest use possible. The most use is not the best use. In fact, Nature is such that if you overuse it, you will lose it! How many ways and times do we have to learn that lesson?

The Friends of Cheasty/Mt. View have had the great fortune of having a group of Seattle University students study Cheasty Greenspace as a civic engagement project this autumn quarter.

The civic problem [as it relates to Cheasty Greenspace] is as follows: The environmental health of Cheasty Greenspace is in danger and the local community is unaware. The class is attempting to increase citizen involvement in the community as well as expand community knowledge of the issues affecting Cheasty Greenspace. By providing citizens with an opportunity to meet with their neighbors and become more aware of the problems that Cheasty Greenspace is facing, they hope to foster long-term citizen involvement.

One key event connected to their service learning efforts is a forest restoration work party this Saturday. See the details for the event below and come out and support these students!

EVENT: Free Cheasty! (Cheasty Greenspace Civic Engagement Event) in partnership with EarthCorps, Saturday, 11/20/10, 10 am - 2 pm, Cheasty Greenspace, Beacon Hill.

For more information on the event and if your schedule allows for your participation, you can sign up on the EarthCorps website<http://www.earthcorps.org/volunteer.php?dateId=834>.
*Please note this event is taking place in the greenspace NORTH of Columbian Way, not Cheasty/Mt.
