Hi all,

Well, it's been 6 months since the last update, and things are finally
working themselves out. The Torah Day School has taken possession of
the school, and is finalizing leases with a handful of us to rent
classrooms in what will soon be called the Cultural Corner. In one
classroom will be the Seattle Poetry Lab, ReelYouth and Muse Indigo.
In another classroom will be visual artist Molly Scott. There's still
one classroom available as follows:
700 square feet
$600/month, utilities included (except for wi-fi - we'll be installing
our own and splitting it among the Cultural Corner residents)
Option of a one-year or three-year lease
I believe "early bird" renters get one month free this first year

If you're interested, please contact the property manager, Adam Simon:
206.686.6362 phone
206.755.6345 cell
asi…@realassetsps.com

The Rainier Valley Historical Society is considering storage space in
the building, and Adam says they're hoping the Farmers Market will
come onto the property for next year's market. AlleCat Acres was on
the original RFP to create P-patches with the gardens there, but I've
not been in contact with them. There's been some communication gaps
while things are in transition, but hopefully everything will smooth
out after the Jewish holidays. Those of us renting plan on moving in
on October 1st.

We collectively hope to create a community arts gathering space, and
will put out a calendar of events once we move in and get settled.

Thanks to everyone who's been on this ride for the past five years.
Your input and the discussions we've had have been really valuable in
terms of seeing what's important to the neighborhood. What we've ended
up with is a mixture, and that seems like as good a solution as we
could have for now.

Sincerely and optimistically

Joanne Lauterjung Kelly
Resident and Wannabe Creative Catalyst

Forum category: planning & organizing / local groups
Forum thread: Friends of Columbia School

Would be fun to see what others are growing, share tips and tricks, and save money on seeds.

Forum category: all other discussion / discussions on pages
Forum thread: garden club

I had a wheel and a seat stolen. Someone tried to break my U-lock last week. I know of another person who had their bike stolen.

Sorry I have not seen a Trek that matches the description.

An easy solution would be to have security cameras at the station. I would hope sound Transit would include this in their new plan. Maybe someone from ST can respond on this post.

Forum category: CC living / safety
Forum thread: bike security at columbia city light rail station?

It's too overgrown, and the season has been too dry.

But wade along the shore on the east side of Seward park, and it's berry heaven. I know the Parks Dept has worked hard to replace the exotic blackberries with native plants, but the berries are back in force.
I'm sorry about that. We've read about this before, and I keep hearing about ripped-off parts (seats, lights, and other components). I ride to Link all through the winter, but I rarely leave my bike at the station. Mine is a beloved beater. I'd hate to lose it, but I'm thinking no one else would give it a second look!

SoundTransit recently announced they'll be installing 7 new bicycle lockers this year and 46 next year at the station (heard via Seattle Transit Blog). I think locker rental costs $50 annually. I've never used the lockers before.

Forum category: CC living / safety
Forum thread: bike security at columbia city light rail station?

I was disappointed today to find that my bike, which I've regularly been leaving parked at the Columbia City Light Rail station while I am at work, was stolen from there today. I left it parked there until almost 10:00 p.m. (later than usual) and when I went to retrieve it, it was gone. It was locked with a Kryptonite U-Lock.

Two questions:
1) Have many other people had bikes stolen here?
2) Have you seen a very large Trek mountain bike (grey with red trim)?

Forum category: CC living / safety
Forum thread: bike security at columbia city light rail station?

Today it was the ice cream stand's generator. The ice cream stand and the roasted corn stand aren't part of the farmers market. They are at the park because of the market, but the market has no control on them.

I guess the thing to do is tell the ice cream stand their generator is making the park unpleasant to be in.
A friend of mine is running a tree give away program through the city of Seattle. This year they are giving trees to target neighborhoods in south seattle (georgetown, beacon hill, columbia city, etc…). each household can receive up to four trees, and they do not have to go by the curb… they can go anywhere on the property. This is a great opportunity to get some free trees for yourselves and for your neighbors.

More information on the program can be found at http://seattle.gov/trees/treesforneighborhoods.htm

One of the options is an Italian plum tree.

Reasons why trees are cool and we should promote this program:
Trees make our space more pleasant
Trees help to clean our air
Trees reduce the urban heat island effect
Trees help to clean puget sound by reducing storm water runoff.

Forum category: all other discussion / anything goes
Forum thread: 2010 Trees for Neighborhoods

Nuclear power is the cleanest and the safest form of energy available in the world today. Most people don't realize this because the mainstream news media, which is mostly owned by the same banking interests that also own the oil and gas industry, routinely spreads disinformation about nuclear power. This helps perpetuate reliance on petroleum-based energy. It's very profitable to manipulate public perception around nuclear power.

Forum category: CC living / perspective
Forum thread: global and personal perspectives from Columbia Citizens

Hi There,

I know last year there was the same thing going on with one of the stalls that was using a generator for a fan. We asked them if the noise could be stopped and they said they didn't realize it was a problem and promptly moved it. This year I think it is the icecream stand set up right there as well as a truck that keeps its motor running (for refigeration purposes?) I think it would be great to tell someone at the market.. The folks at the main info desk as you enter as well as the vendors. You are right it is not fun! We will do the same next time we go to market.

Thanks!

Forum category: CC living / lifestyle
Forum thread: Generator Noise at Farmers Market

Hi there! Just wanted to share our experience yesterday at Asa Mercer Middle School! Pictures can be found on our Facebook page, and a video on YouTube. It was really great to see all of those people volunteering to make a difference in the local community. I've attached the content of the blog post so you know what we were up to:

We can’t believe that August is almost over. For some this means football season is about to kick-off, and for others that ski season is around the corner. If you are a kid you have one thing on your mind: summer vacation is over and school is about to start back up.

When students return to Asa Mercer Middle School in Seattle’s Beacon Hill Neighborhood things might look a little bit different than it did on that memorable day last Spring when they embarked on their Summer break. That is because yesterday over 100 Clearwire employees took some time away from the office to help revitalize the school grounds. Murals were painted, flowers were planted, and benches were constructed.

Each of Asa Mercer Middle School’s 850 students will also receive a new backpack on the first day of school. These backpacks and other school supplies were donated through a supply drive for which Clearwire employees raised over $5,000. 34 Lenovo laptops were also given to the school that will help fill the space in the school’s new mobile computer lab.

“Students will be wowed when they learn that they can take a laptop from the library to the classroom,” said Principal Andhra Lutz.

Clearwire wishes to thank all of the employees who contributed to today’s event. You guys and gals rock!

This event is part of Clearwire’s Connecting With Communities program which aims to improve communities across the US. If you have any questions about the program please contact Michael Nank at michael.nank[at]clearwire.com.

Forum category: all other discussion / anything goes
Forum thread: Clearwire Employees Volunteer at Mercer Middle School

Hi - I love animals, but letting dogs off leash in Columbia Park has to stop. I know you think that your dog won't hurt anyone, but you have no way of knowing that. Today two dogs that were running off leash with their owner nearby attacked my cat who was just laying in the yard. He is injured and hiding where I can't get to him and I am distraught. If you know there is a dog park nearby and you know that having your dog off leash is illegal, why do you do it? I love dogs, but please, please, please stop letting your dogs off leash and take them to the dog park where they can be dogs and not hurt anyone or anycat. This is to all the people who let their dogs off leash, not just the woman with the German Shepard and other big brown dog who ran away cowardly after I told her that her dogs attacked my cat. Shame on you.

Forum category: all other discussion / anything goes
Forum thread: dogs off leash in columbia park

I've noticed the same, and wondered about it. It is abrasive. I think the generator belongs to the ice cream vendor, who apparently needs it to keep the freezer going.

I'm sure the Farmers Market probably has nothing to do with it, and likely has little they can do about it. Seattle loves its mobile food vendors (think taco trucks and the various gourmet meals on wheels, like Skillet & Marination). In response, the City is making it easier for these vendors to sell their wares. An ironic upshot is that some are drawn to where the buyers are: at the outskirts of the farmers market.

Here's a recent post from a market vendor that touches on the issue.

Forum category: CC living / lifestyle
Forum thread: Generator Noise at Farmers Market

Women’s Funding Alliance (WFA) has awarded $357,500 to 21 Washington state organizations focused on providing political, economic and social opportunities for women and girls, including three based in COLUMIBA CITY: Latinos for Community Transformation, Pinay sa Seattle and Refugee Women's Alliance.

The grants, ranging from $2,000 to $25,000, bring the total community contribution of WFA to more than $5.5 million since the foundation’s inception.

The 21 beneficiary organizations were selected amongst a pool of 113 applicants requesting more than $1.3 million in funding. Grants were awarded in five primary funding areas: civic participation and leadership, education, health and well-being, safety and violence, and economic opportunity. An additional 17 groups were selected as beneficiaries of WFA’s workplace giving funds, and another three were announced in early 2010 as recipients of WFA’s Leah C. McCollough Legacy Fund. Total foundation giving for its 09-10 fiscal year is expected to exceed $600,000.

“It’s our vision to create a world where women are safe, healthy and empowered,” said LeAnne Moss, executive director of Women’s Funding Alliance. “WFA is leading the charge by not only funding groups that are often overlooked and underfunded, but also by acting as a catalyst for long-term social change by challenging organizations and governments to look at issues through the gender lens.”

REAL, LOCAL IMPACT
Women’s Funding Alliance invested nearly $600,000 in Washington state organizations during its 09-10 fiscal year, while benefiting more than 170,000 women and girls in the Puget Sound region during that same period. Its goal over the next five years is to invest at least half of its granting into efforts that increase the overall economic well-being of low-income and underemployed women and girls, particularly single heads of households and females from marginalized communities.

Washington Women’s Employment & Education (WWEE) is one recipient of WFA’s economic opportunity funding: “WFA funding has had a significant impact on our programs,” said Robin Lester, executive director of WWEE. “It allows us to leverage resources through partnerships and financial contributions from organizations that understand and respect that funding from WFA is both a sign of the success of a program and symbol of our organization’s commitment to enhancing the position of women in our community.”

WFA Economic Opportunity Grants fund operating or project support in four priority areas: creating better jobs, building entrepreneurship, increasing assets and financial literacy, and public policy reform. The 2010 Economic Opportunity grantees are:

• Economic Opportunity Institute – Seattle (Wallingford)
• Enterprise for Equity – Olympia
• Latinos for Community Transformation – Seattle (Rainier Valley / Columbia City)
• Legal Voice – Seattle (Central Business District)
• Nonprofit Assistance Center – Seattle (Central District)
• Northwest Health Law Advocates – Seattle (University District)
• Northwest Indian College – Bellingham
• Parents Organizing for Welfare and Economic Rights – Olympia
• Powerful Voices – Seattle (Capitol Hill)
• Washington Community Alliance for Self Help (CASH) – Seattle (Central District)
• Washington State Coalition Against Domestic Violence – Seattle (Central Business District)
• Washington Women’s Employment & Education – Tacoma
• Women in Transition – Kenmore

WFA Community Response Grants address civic participation and leadership, education, health and well-being, and safety and violence. The 2010 Community Response grantees are:

• Church of Mary Magdalene – Seattle (South Lake Union)
• Domestic Violence & Sexual Assault Services of Whatcom County – Bellingham
• Family Planning of Clallam County – Port Angeles
• King County Coalition Against Domestic Violence – Seattle (Central District)
• Legal Voice – Seattle (Central Business District)
• Nonprofit Assistance Center – Seattle (Central District)
• Northwest Indian College Cooperative Extension Office – Bellingham
• Residential Recovery Program for Prostituted Children – Seattle (Pioneer Square_
• Seattle Counseling Service – Seattle (Capitol Hill)
• YWCA Pierce County – Tacoma

WFA facilitates a giving circle, the Ripple Fund, in which individuals contribute $5,000 to fund specific organizations. The 2010 Ripple Fund grantees are:

• Hilltop Artists – Tacoma
• If Project (Seattle Police Foundation) – Seattle (Central Business District)
• The Power of Hope – Seattle (West Seattle)

WFA had previously announced its Leah C. McCollough Legacy Fund grantees, which focuses on building the leadership and capacity of non-profit organizations serving women and girls. They are: Pinay sa Seattle-GABRIELA USA – Seattle (Columbia City); The Sophia Way – Bellevue; and Tierra Madre Fund – Seattle.

WFA also partners with regionally based employers through their workplace giving campaigns and allocates Unrestricted Operating Grants to the following organizations:

• Abused Deaf Women's Advocacy Services – Seattle (Northgate/Maple Leaf)
• BABES Network-YWCA – Seattle (Central Business District)
• Breast Cancer Resource Center – Tacoma
• Chaya – Seattle
• Citrine Health – Everett
• FaithTrust Institute – Seattle (Wallingford)
• Family Planning of Clallam County – Port Angeles
• Harborview Sexual Assault & Traumatic Stress – Seattle (University District)
• Intercommunity Mercy Housing – Seattle (Belltown)
• Jubilee Women's Center – Seattle (Capitol Hill)
• King County Coalition Against Domestic Violence – Seattle (Central District)
• King County Sexual Assault Resource Center – Renton
• Legal Voice – Seattle (Central Business District)
• Northwest Indian College – Bellingham
• Passages Northwest – Seattle (Central District)
• Planned Parenthood of the Great Northwest – Seattle (Central District)
• Powerful Voices – Seattle (Capitol Hill)
• Real Change – Seattle (Pioneer Square)
• Refugee Women's Alliance – Seattle (Columbia City)
• Residence XII – Kirkland
• Seattle Girls' School – Seattle (Central District)
• Washington Community Alliance for Self Help (CASH) – Seattle (Central District)
• Washington State NARAL Foundation – Seattle (Central Business District)
• Women's Housing Equality and Enhancement League (WHEEL) – Seattle (Pike Market)

ABOUT WOMEN’S FUNDING ALLIANCE
Women’s Funding Alliance envisions a world where all women and girls are thriving in a just and equitable society, and have the resources and opportunities to reach their full potential. Established in 1983, Women’s Funding Alliance promotes justice, health and opportunities by investing in the future of women and girls in Washington state. By strategically supporting marginalized and underfunded groups that promote progressive change for women and girls, WFA seeks to have a dramatic impact on the increased ability of these groups to serve the community.
Big Brothers Big Sisters of Puget Sound, a donor-supported mentoring
organization with programs in King County, is looking for male volunteers to be Big Brothers. Volunteers meet with a child in school or on the weekends to play games, do homework, see movies, visit a zoo or museum or just hang out. Children in our programs are kids who could greatly benefit from additional adult guidance. Children are referred to the program for many reasons, and many children come from homes where quality adult attention is limited by single-parenthood or transitional housing, including foster care. Whatever the circumstances, these children need an adult in their lives who is caring, consistent, knows how to listen and can be a good role model. We especially need male volunteers for our many waiting boys. Research shows our programs are working: compared to their non-mentored peers, Little Brothers and Little Sisters are less likely to use violence to solve problems, become more trusting of their parent or guardian, resist substance abuse and improved school attendance.

To inquire, please visit www.bbbsps.org or call 1-877-700-BIGS.

Forum category: all other discussion / anything goes
Forum thread: Become a Big to a child in your community

The system was designed and intended only for business district coverage along Rainier Ave from Alaska to just south of Hudson, so you may just be out of the working coverage area. There are a few reasons there could be a "very poor signal." 1) You're just too far outside the intended coverage area, and you can see the signal with your laptop or other wifi enabled device, but the radio in your wifi device isn't strong enough to communicate back to the Seattlewifi radio (in essence still too far away), 2) There is blockage by trees, buildings, reflective windows or other obstruction (wifi technology is far from perfect, as we found out from this public pilot). Locating near a window could help, or getting an antenna booster could help, but not assured. These are available at stores, online or if so inclined, there are instructions at http://www.netscum.com/~clapp/wireless.html and http://www.seattlewireless.net/DirectionalYagi.
The wifi system is over 5 yrs old now, and the access points are old. The city has kept it going with no money to invest in replacement equipment. The design would be different if it was built or replaced, and if community coverage was the intent.

Forum category: service & business / volunteer & help needed
Forum thread: Accessing free wifi

A frail 70 year old senior living in South Seattle has problems lifting and standing long term, also sitting, climbing stairs, and lifting more than 2-5 lbs. She had hip surgery and has back problems, and some years ago she had heart surgery. She has no family who lives close by. She would like help with vacuuming, bathroom, mopping, and cleaning the kitchen. She prefers a female volunteer, and is and early bird, preferring mornings. A volunteer should respect that she has a collection of mementoes, but feels like everything has a particular place.

Your elderly and disabled neighbors need your assistance with tasks they are no longer able to do on their own. The laundry is too awkward, the bed too difficult to make, and the groceries are too heavy to carry. A few hours, every other week, would be a great help to the clients who have been on our waiting list. Volunteer positions are close to where you live, and are available on a schedule that works for you. Volunteer individually, with a friend, or with your family.

Volunteer Chore Services, a program of Catholic Community Services, is a "safety net" for elders and adults living with disabilities who are unable or ineligible for state/paid chore services. All recipients are low-income, have health problems or difficulty with mobility, and most live alone. A growing volunteer opportunity in your neighborhood consists of driving clients to doctor appointments, grocery shopping or other chores. We carefully match volunteers to opportunities based on their personalities, neighborhood, and preferences.

Currently, volunteers are donating over 3000 hours a month in the Seattle area. However, there is still a huge number of people waiting for help, and a shortage of volunteers. Volunteers are needed all over Seattle and South King County, but especially in areas like South Seattle.

Due to the vulnerable nature of our clients, volunteers must complete a registration packet, provide three personal references, pass a background check, and attend an orientation.

If you drive while volunteering, we reimburse for your mileage.

For more information on how you can help in your neighborhood, please email gro.wwscc|ceirrek#gro.wwscc|ceirrek,
call Kerrie Carbary, the volunteer coordinator in your area, at 206-328-6858, Volunteer Chore Services main intake line at 206-328-5787.

Forum category: service & business / volunteer & help needed
Forum thread: Make a Difference Doing Simple Chores for a Local Senior in Need

hi, Do you already know how to access wifi generally? It's somewhat different for Mac or PC, but here's a stab at explaining. Others may be able to pitch in. To test, you want to be as close to Rainier Ave as possible since that's where the antennas are and near the window in a place like Lotties, Geraldines, bookstore, laundromat, etc.
You want to open your wireless network menu, search for wireless networks. The city's Columbia City free wifi shows up as "seattlewifi" and it will show up as an unsecured network. Choose to connect to this network.
Then open your browser after it connects and try to go to a web page. A sign-in menu should come up.
You can call me at 291-4817 if you need additional talking through on this.

- david

Forum category: service & business / volunteer & help needed
Forum thread: Accessing free wifi

While it's not a parking lot, you might want to try the Georgetown area - Between Airport Way and 1st Ave, north of Michigan. There are a lot of Warehouse areas with empty parking lots and many deserted streets on the weekends.

Forum category: service & business / local referrals
Forum thread: Need a lot to practice driving

Public radio is my mainstay for news from the world beyond Columbia City. This week there's been some overlap between their news and ours.

Chris Joyner is the kombucha guy at the farmers market, and he's a recently transplanted Columbia Citizen. Yesterday KUOW had a feature about his business, which until recently had avoided the widespread kombucha ban.

And today, Morning Edition interviewed Frank Fairfield, a roots banjoist who'll play at the Columbia City Theater this weekend.

Forum category: CC living / lifestyle
Forum thread: kombucha & banjo

I'm helping someone who hasn't been behind the wheel in quite a few years, still has a license, and just needs to brush up on their skills. Can anyone suggest some large lots nearby that are relatively empty during the day on weekends? This would be for general driving/parking practice before tackling local roads again. Thanks!

Forum category: service & business / local referrals
Forum thread: Need a lot to practice driving
