In 2004 Columbia City Cinema rolled into Rainier Valley and quickly became "the little cinema that could". Somehow, with fantastic community support and extreme good luck, it survived.

Two new screens opened this fall. "Giving people choice keeps people in the neighborhood," explains owner Paul Doyle. "Now with three movies to choose from, there'll always be something here people want to see." It's still only $6 for matinees, children and seniors and $8 for regular admission. You can still get a small popcorn for $2, and a family can indulge in extreme dietary excess for less than $10. "It doesn’t bankrupt you to come here," Doyle says, "and people rave about the popcorn."

In the lobby and in the seats, friends and neighbors see each other and find time to catch up. The building is a converted Masonic temple built in 1920. There's a real small-town atmosphere to the place, and an old-fashioned movie palace charm. It has the velvet-curtain, brass-chandelier, paneled-door elegance you don't see much anymore. The original upstairs auditorium is the largest with 204 seats. The other two screens are downstairs with 116 and 90 seats respectively. The downstairs auditoriums are wheelchair accessible. All three screens have state of the art DTS digital surround sound.

As the site grows, there are handy tools to help you out. How to get a quick summary of what's in here?

A site map spells out how we've organized Columbia Citizens. It's an ordered list that groups pages into categories, offering another way to explore the site and find pages that interest you.

Our site map is tucked behind the welcome message on the front page. For each category (such as artists, organizing, resources), the site map delves into the first two layers of what's in here. But there's even more than meets the eye — several limbs of this tree branch still further. Try it and find out!

Want to see the whole thing? A complete list of Columbia Citizens pages is here.

The neighborhood blogosphere was a pretty sleepy place until the Rainier Valley Post went into hyperdrive. It's been going gangbusters this month, with more than 120 entries, all about southeast Seattle.

Blogger Amber Campbell has been hard at work to bring Southeast news and views to a local audience. You might have read her occasional Let's Talk essays in the Beacon Hill News / South District Journal, which she's posted in a separate blog, Citizen about Town.
The Rainier Valley Post is a good overview of what's going on in the area and leaves the "blogossiphere" section of the Citizens' Wikli full to brimming. She's listed the site alongside many other local blogs in neighbors.

Want to get the RV Post directly? Paste this link into your feed reader:
http://rainiervalleypost.blogspot.com/feeds/posts/default

And while you're at it, you can paste in the feed for Columbia Citizens' comments, an easy and hassle-free way to tap in to your community.
http://columbiacitizens.net/feed/forum/posts.xml

This week Seattle Channel features Columbia City on its out-and-about program, CityStream. And it includes what has to be the first-ever TV coverage of a neighborhood wiki.

Once you've seen the important part, take a look at the rest of the piece, which first aired May 29, 2008. It does a good job of showcasing BeatWalk, with some great Citizen cameos.

Columbia Citizens have a whole online library of neighborhood video, with insights into Columbia City history, venues, businesses, nonprofit programs and community events.
