This evening I sat in Columbia Park, next to the market. That scene says it all — when we get together to help make good ideas happen in our community, Columbia City succeeds. It's what drives this site: to help Citizens connect with each other and with what we value in the neighborhood.

Over the past year, many people have participated in this experiment in community building, the wiki. It's time for a wider discussion to share ideas and impressions.

Let's get together and talk about the future of the wiki.

Where: The Alehouse
When: Monday, August 18, 7pm

n.b. laptops and libations don't mix. Leave yours at home.

There are so many angles, so let's make this a free-form discussion. Here are a few questions to think about beforehand.

What do you want to do with Columbia Citizens?

What's working? What could work better?

What's motivated you to participate so far?

What would make the experience more fun?

What might motivate other neighbors?

In the meantime, here are some numbers.

~4000 monthly visits

~12 000 monthly pageviews

~30 comments per week

~270 total pages

~440 subscribers to Wikli alerts

~75 Citizen members

If you have ideas or questions you'd like to share, please use this comment thread. If this conversation is something folks enjoy, then maybe we can have it more regularly.

Hi Bruno:

We're a wiki about a small neighborhood and not about art per se, though Columbia City is graced with many arts and artists. Columbia Citizens features an art gallery and many, many references to local arts events. Some of them happen at the Columbia City Gallery, and SEEDarts does a lot to inject life and art into the community. As neighbors here, we're certainly fortunate in that respect.

Thanks for asking.

S.

If there are other development proposals in the pipeline, we can build similar pages for them.

I'm working with a group called the "Healthy and Active Rainier Valley Coalition" and we're interested in promoting culturally relevant projects that increase access to healthy foods and physical activity. We would also like to do more in the realm of health policy. There's a lot going on in the Valley right now and it would be great to have a section where people can learn what's going on thnen ways to give feedback. For example Parks and Recreation will be having open houses coming up for input on the new strategic plan and to meet the new park's director. Right now they have an on-line survey and a listing of upcoming visits: http://www.seattle.gov/parks/Publications/BusinessPlan.htm

So, I was thinking about more audience participation: As such, would there be some interest in a Photo Caption Contest? Maybe we could do it through Flickr comments? (I wouldn't want to exclude non-Flickr-users.) Maybe a winner once a quarter? Once a month might be too often?

Would there be a prize? Just bragging rights? A coveted spot in the Wikli? A real spot on the wall at the, say, Alehouse or at Lola?

Would vendors in the 'hood provide small prizes?

Would this be lame?

I wonder if you could ask for volunteers to write regular updates on various aspects of life here: community meetings, police reports, planning meetings, concerts, restaurant specials, beatwalk, school news, etc. Wouldn't take too many people to make this a lively space and a good resource!

How about pages on each of the new housing developments in the greater neighborhood? It'd probably not be hard to get the basic info from the city and post it for discussion by neighbors… and it might lead to some good ideas and concerted action to make sure that all this new housing (welcome in my opinion) is designed and built in a way that improves the neighborhood.

From: "Marjorie Raunig"
Date: November 3, 2007 4:43:58 PM PDT
To: Jenn
Subject: Re: the wiki, Yahoo group, email list, etc.

The e-mail group that Marj (that's me) "manages" is a block watch alert list. If a neighbor is the victim of a crime, or sees something or someone suspicious, he or she e-mails me and I, in turn, send it out to the n'hood list as well as to our Community Police Team and Crime Prevention Coordinator when appropriate. The purpose is to make us all more alert to crime and safety issues in the n'hood and, consequently, to have a safer neighborhood.

The geographic location is primarily Columbia Heights (42nd to 50th, and Alaska to Dawson), but there are a few people on the list outside of that area. There is no relationship between that list and the others you refer to, other than many people are on both.

I tried to post this to the wiki but was unsuccessful. Feel free to post it if you like!

Marj

This is a great conversation that I’ve had with a few people already.

Short answer: I know and appreciate Marj and I know the folks who organized some of the neighborhood email groups. There aren’t any secrets — and free-flow of neighborhood information is the main reason that each one exists in the first place.

Long answer: I think listservs and wikis do different things. The yahoogroup format seems to work well, especially for messages targeted to certain interest groups: neighbor activists, the business associations, etc. It's good for alerts, when information is time-sensitive. It's also good for just dialogue. Yahoogroups don't seem to work quite as well when the group grows or diversifies to the point when many of the messages are irrelevant, or when there's just too much volume. Spam can sometimes be a problem. It's also a clumsy way for several people to collaborate, because everyone gets everyone's input in installments, which can be tough to parse through.

Columbia Citizens provides an online place for any one project or discussion. In a wiki, we can create and update content as if it were in a studio or anyplace where people can design together. The Citizens' Wikli is a good example of a collaborative wiki-project. In a listserv, the ideas can be more like so many ping pong balls bouncing every which way between people — difficult to focus and to form. Unlike a listserv, Columbia Citizens makes it easier for neighbors to casually find content — sometimes months old but still relevant — and to take stock of a work in progress. They can just visit and don't have to sign up to look or to participate.

Columbia Citizens is generally less email-intensive (except when it’s ginning up Wikli interest), which means people have to find their way to each topic, and they need to keep checking in. Wikis aren't as familiar as email. For some people, Columbia Citizens could be more engaging than a listserv, but it can also be more anonymous. Wikis aren’t prone to abuse and tampering, because any changes are pretty easy to wipe away before they get wide readership. Edits in a wiki might be more contentious and frustrating: heck, everyone's a critic, and this could be a critic's free-for-all. So the pros and cons are different.

I think it's possible for the various lists and tools to work together. Any group can talk through its listserv and work together in Columbia Citizens when that format works better. Columbia Citizens has a directory of local email groups out there. If we want this wiki to behave a little more like a listserv, I think I can also figure out how to set up straightforward RSS feeds, which would let people select wiki pages that interest them and receive updates when people make edits.

Thank you, Scott, for getting this publicly-shared wiki started, and for nurturing its growth.

I am also aware of a semi-active Yahoo group at http://groups.yahoo.com/group/ColumbiaCitizens/ . Then I also learned of a private email list that an active neighbor named Marj manages. Those are more good examples of positive grass-roots organizing.

Can someone explain the relationship between them all? Is there a hope to consolidate all three? What's the conversation like between the people who actually have ownership?

I suppose that "ownership" is a bad word to use. Anyone who reads this post or is a participant in any of these efforts probably feels some sort of "ownership" of the grass-roots organizing. As well they should! I guess I should say "What's the conversation like between the people who actually have "admin powers" to those efforts?

Or, is it a secret?
:-)

I'd like to suggest working to bring the virtual discussion back to the physical neighborhood…

It could be that someone prints out one of threads, attaches an explanation (that it's from a community wiki website) and posts it in public (on the various bulletin boards, maybe at the bars and restaurants, maybe local non-profits).

It could inform some people who aren't online here, and perhaps encourage their participation.

For that matter, what about a "drink locally" discussion night about local issues at the Alehouse once every month or so?

Just a few ideas.

Hi Scott,
I'd like to suggest the addition of a copyright notice on the wiki page that contains the Flickr images of CC. The notices and permissions files that accompany Flickr photos do not seem to translate over to this wiki page. It would be good to post a notice at the top of the photos page and a tag line that accompanies photos used to illustrate other pages of the wiki that the photos are copyrighted materials and may not be used further without written permission of the owners. Thanks,
-Kim
