There have been a few posts here on Columbia Citizens about getting an active neighborhood blog going for Columbia City…and, after a year or two of false starts, Columbia City Source is up, running, and ready for neighbors to dive in!

There’s a brief post on the about page that explains the idea of the site and how to get involved. For now, the idea is pretty simple: the neighborhood has been in need of its own dedicated blog/website and a couple of neighbors came up with Columbia City Source to fill that need. In short, if anything Columbia City-related pops up or comes our way, we post it and provide a forum for neighbors to engage. As feedback on the site develops, things might change a bit…but for now, I think we can be pretty open about what CC-related items we post.

If you want to get involved or submit a link or an item to post, be sure to let us know. We are definitely looking for people who want to play a role in keeping the site up-to-date with relevant content and making this website grow.

Let’s make this take off…

-Eric (on 35th & Hudson)

We did meet and it looks like a blog is definitely going to happen. What it will actually look like and who will be involved is still getting sorted out.

The plan for now is to have another meeting in a week or so after we get a bit more feedback from the neighborhood and some time to put together some of the ideas we initially kicked around.

For now though, more neighborhood input and involvement is what we really need. So, let's open it up: when a new Columbia City Blog goes live, what do you want to see on it?

Chime in here and stay posted for the next interest meeting…

I suggest Sol Yoga in Leschi, their description seems just what you are looking for. I haven't gone there myself, as I prefer a non heated experience at Lotus Yoga, but if you want to check it out your first class is free, according to their website. Their studio is a 10 minute drive along beautiful Lake Washington from Columbia City (I know because my massage office is in the same complex; what a great commute! :))
www.solyoga.com

Hi,

Me and my wife go to the Bikram Yoga Studio in Renton. We have been going there for about 2 years now, and love the studio. We are renting in Renton now, but just bought a house in Columbia City and will be moving there soon. The teachers at the studio are very very friendly and helpful. However, the single most important reason we like this studio is the sense of community it gives you. People of all ages, races, shapes and sizes come to this studio, and are constantly impressed by it. Check out their website www.bikramyogarenton.com for more information. It's worth the try :) Hope this helps!

Cheers,
Vikram.

Except that it's not very active it, it's often difficult to follow, and often updates get missed because people aren't staying up to date on all the pages in the background. Rather, it's just the latest comments that get read. Also, since the comments essentially "become the front headlines," I think a lot of folks are hesitant to actually engage in discussion.

Yeah, RVP is macro, and this site is micro. I don't see what else you would need. This is exactly the spot to go for "developments, rumors, businesses, car break-ins, events, block-wide garage sales, block parties, etc."

I read it all the time…there's a ton of news about Columbia City, however, that goes overlooked—mainly little stuff: developments, rumors, businesses, car break-ins, events, block-wide garage sales, block parties, etc. Not really worthy of journalism…just small updates about the neighborhood.

I don't think those things necessarily belong on the RVP. It serves it's purpose well. The regular readers and commenters (like you) have a home and voice there, the South End is covered decently, but it's not a neighborhood blog. And, I think the new format is confusing.

Something a bit more homey to the neighborhood would be nice.

Yes, I've heard of the RVP. I read it. My problem is that I feel that most of the stuff I see is more crime related or otherwise highlights certain aspects of the area. It would be ok if it were more balanced out. There is a lot of development that happens and new businesses that you never hear about, but you'll certainly hear a lot about someone being shot. That police car photo that is attached to the crime stories is seen more than anything else.

I feel like I'm being too negative about the RVP - they do serve a purpose. But I think there is demand for content that is less focused on community safety and activism.

Greetings!

I am in desperate need of a hot (or even warm!) yoga studio in the southside! After recently moving from the eastside, I've been surprised by the lack of yoga studios in this area. Does anyone know of a jem out there that I may have missed? While I have tried Lotus, I am really looking for something more vigorous (vinyasa) that leaves me feeling energized as well as focused and relaxed in the aftermath. Suggestions very much appreciated! I've also tried Seven Hot Yoga in Renton, but they are a bit out of the way, and the studio's heating system leaves something to be desired. I love HYI, but they are difficult to get to from Columbia City.

Thank you in advance and namaste!

Agreed a local news blog would be a nice addition to the sense of community in Columbia City, but without paying someone to do it, folks go until they burn out. Journalism and capitalism do not make a great combination, so it would take an angel (or a few) and a good journalist, or a few of them without an agenda. Perhaps a community blog could be merged with a Low Power FM radio station. The FCC is opening up LPFM's to cities like Seattle in October and I would be interested in being involved in a Columbia/Hillman City LPFM and already run a Hillman City-based non-profit corp with a great deal of radio experience. If there are potential backers and partners interested in this idea, I can be reached at gro.balps|nep#gro.balps|nep and 206.422.5002. Paul Nelson
