This is good timing as I just received an email from them requesting help to replace several bicycles that were recently stolen. Very disappointing considering all the good they do for the community.

Tomorrow I turn 40. And I have a birthday wish.

I feel really lucky. I live with my family in a place we love, among neighbors we sure do enjoy, and who clearly have caught that same Columbia City bug.

We've got many inspiring neighborhood causes, but I'm picking one. I'm asking friends and neighbors to give a birthday donation to Bike Works.

For the last 13 years, they've empowered kids from all walks to ride like they earned it, to work on bikes and earn their own wheels through sweat equity. And that's just one of Bike Works' programs. Bikes and bike repair are their catalyst for action in environment, social justice, community, and fun.

I'm not sure it's cool to broadcast a birthday wish across the neighborhood. I've gotta admit, it's unnerving even. But the coolness of having our own nonprofit bike shop in Columbia City, and the amazing things they do — that clearly tips the balance in favor of putting this once-in-a-decade wish out there.

For all that they do — and they do it with talent, humor, and gusto — please consider including Bike Works in your giving, and thank you for making my 40th that much more special.

When walking home on Ferdinand from the light rail on Tuesday night, I was followed by a VERY charming, small charcoal grey cat that fits your description. She started following me about a block off of MLK and walked all the way down the street next to me, meowing and purring all the way. She followed me across Rainier (!!!) and to a friend's house just on the other side of the street. She played in the yard for a few minutes, but just as I was about to walk her back across the street and hopefully leave her where she started following me, she'd disappeared.

If you plan to put up flyers, that's probably a good place to do it - and tell her to stop being so cute and friendly or she'll find herself lost once a week!

Do you know whose she is? Completely charcoal grey (even her nose), about half-grown, short haired cat, very friendly. Found near the Columbia City School building. She has her own room at my house at the moment. Please call 206-799-9539 if she is yours or you know whose she is.

My Aunt was hit by a car Saturday, April 18th - approx. 11:30am on the corner near the Columbia City Bakery in Columbia City. She lost consciousness from the impact and was taken to Harborview. She has since regained consciousness and is recovering at Harborview. She has no memory of the accident, and no one we know was there, so our family is looking for anyone that may have seen the accident or know anything. The police are involved but we're not sure how much information they have.

Here is an update from the Rainier Valley Post on the donation effort and info on how you can help. $1,875 has been donated so far by average everyday residents of Rainier Valley. More is needed.

Per the Rainier Valley Post, Pierre LaPointe, who was murdered on Rainier in Hillman City last Tuesday "leaves behind a single mom, raising two other children, one of whom is seriously ill and in the hospital as I write this. Pierre's mother had no life insurance on her son and is unable to bury him."

When I first came across the plea for donations, I bristled at the idea of helping out somebody who, judging from his arrest record was some kind of thug. But the RVP's editor got it right, responding to a comment which made the same point:

I'm not sure whether Pierre had an arrest record or not, but where I come from, a person's life isn't defined by some poor decisions and poor decisions don't make anyone - especially a child - unworthy of a proper burial.

Only good can come from citizens of the Valley circling the wagons and helping their own.

My name is Lowell Deo and I am a producer for a Seattle Channel program called Neighborhood News. We visit neighborhoods around Seattle twice a month and spotlight the positive goings-on there. David Keyes told me about your wiki program. I would love to learn more about it for a possible story to air May 22nd.

My first thought is — great! Here's some new support for all the cool things happening in the neighborhood.

My second thought is — it can't be done. How do we project the spirit of a community-driven website on TV? If they interview the site admin, that would go against the grain of the thing. Columbia Citizens is all about what neighbors care to share with neighbors.

Columbia Citizens needs its Citizenry to help show what it is we're doing here.

What if a bunch of us showed up at the farmers market toting our canvas bags and a pithy sentence or two to share with Lowell? Something simple like — How do you take part in Columbia Citizens?

Any other suggestions?

My aunt passed away and we are looking for a home for her cat.

My name is Bailey.
I am five years old [now 6] and have all my shots and records.
I like to play with strings and sleep at the foot of your bed.
I am very sweet, smart and playful.
I take cozy time seriously and I have a loud purr.
I won't claw your couch or drapes because my front paws have been
declawed.
I like to sleep inside. Sometimes during the day I like to chase bugs
and lay in the yard (but I don't go far from home).
I live with another cat and we fight for attention. I would like to be
the only cat in the house.
I like socks full of catnip and those fake mice to toss around when
you are at work.
