Public radio is my mainstay for news from the world beyond Columbia City. This week there's been some overlap between their news and ours.

Chris Joyner is the kombucha guy at the farmers market, and he's a recently transplanted Columbia Citizen. Yesterday KUOW had a feature about his business, which until recently had avoided the widespread kombucha ban.

And today, Morning Edition interviewed Frank Fairfield, a roots banjoist who'll play at the Columbia City Theater this weekend.

Certainly different than my experience. First (and only) time I went in, Willie Nelson (I think) was just put on the jukebox and someone brought over for me and my friends a pitcher of beer they weren't going to finish. A fond memory.

Here's an idea: the property could be sold and developed into a more stable building with a commercial space leased to a brewery - Columbia City Brewery - headlining a super hoppy red ale name Angie's. Now how about that!

Add me to the list of colored people who are happy to see Angie's close! If you want to support diversity in the community then patronize the Ethiopian-immigrant owned mini-mart, the Mexican-American owned restaurant, the African-American owned fitness club, the Korean-immigrant owned noodle house or the Asian-immigrant owned nail salon. These small-business owners, along with their colleagues and the brave community members who took back the streets with their dog-walks are the REAL SOUL of this community, not those who harbour drunk criminals and serve liquor to minors (see police reports for evidence) and their patrons. I wish people on this board would end the insulting insinuations that closing a crime infested bar will drive out poor people of color. The color of one's skin and one's income does not dictate one's desire to live in a safe community! Don't you think that "poor colored people" want to live in a neighborhood where our children can walk to the library and the park without being offered drugs, sex, and booze. Closing Angie's is a great step in that direction.

Since I have never been greeted or welcomed in this establishment; I would love to see it close. It attracts broken bottles, street disputes, drugs transactions and probably more than I know. The first time I went into the place, everyone turned to look at me and then one person said, "are you looking for someone?" The second time, I sat at the bar and was ignored by the bartender until I left. The owner's do not keep the sidewalk in front of their business clean nor do this discourage folks from hanging out trashing the street, the sidewalk and the neighborhood.

The Schlamps, owners of the site formerly known as St Gobain, are doing the legwork to create an indoor sports facility. I've heard gymnastics and baseball — maybe more? The facility would be in the cavernous building(s?) once devoted to specialized plastics manufacturing. Harbor Properties controls only the northwest corner of the site, where they're proposing an apartment building.

Our two neighborhood K-8 public schools will have new principals next year — Orca @Whitworth and South Shore (temporarily) @Columbia. Ben Ostrom is moving on after several years at Orca, and Sherrie Encarnation has led the New School for only about a year, but what a year it was.

Word is that there just aren't that many Seattle Public Schools principals waiting in the wings, so it's unclear whom the District will tap to lead these schools next year.

… and another piece in Publicola. Erica's in full Crank:

Angie’s: Goodbye, Good Riddance

Is if fair to blame Angie’s for what happens outside their doors? Ordinarily, I’d say no. But the fact is, Angie’s is one of the only spots in the neighborhood (the other being a minimart down the street) where you see open drug dealing, fighting, and prostitution. I walk past Angie’s probably once a day. In the years I’ve lived in the neighborhood, I’ve seen prostitution turning tricks in the alley behind the bar. I’ve been offered drugs. And I’ve been harassed (usually, the “hey, baby” type; occasionally, the following-me-down-the-street type), and witnessed other women being harassed, more times than I can count.

The P-I also had this:

State may pull liquor license for troubled South Seattle bar

Last month, the board's license division director decided not to renew the bar's liquor license, Liquor Control Board spokesman Brian Smith said Wednesday.

The owner made an appeal for an administrative appeal hearing, and the bar, at 4915 Rainier Ave. S., would remain open while that process is ongoing.

If an appeal doesn't move forward, last call would be on Halloween, the day the current license expires. The attorney representing Angie's owner, David Osgood, said by e-mail that the appeal was made last month.

I guess they recently put in some new striping for police-only parking outside Angie's front door. Aiyayay.

It is a policy restriction adopted by Chief Kerlikowskie (sp?) years ago. There was some concern about possible corruption - i.e. off duty cops being paid off by establishment owners to look the other way on liquor law (and other) violations. The policy ended any of those concerns.
