Live locally.

You can post a calendar event — here's how.

2012 Chinook book

The Chinook Book is back! It's Seattle's guide to simple, approachable, affordable ideas for local living. As a coupon book, it's incredibly easy to use. I penciled it out — last year our family saved about $150 without even trying.

This is a win-win-win — for you, for the local scene, and for Graham Hill School. It's a no-nonsense fundraiser for southeast Seattle's most integrated public elementary.

Here's a sampling:

Books are $20, and there's a handy mobile app too. Last year these sales helped Graham Hill Elementary fund tutors, the Powerful Schools program, and busing for after-school programs.

Thursday, October 13, 6pm
Columbia City Church of Hope
(3818 South Angeline St)

In 2011 Leigh Pate cycled 4000 km through India. Traveling by bicycle took her far off the tourist path and into beautiful rural areas rarely seen by Westerners. The photographer will talk about her trip and show slides of her photographs. Some prints are framed and available for sale, and a percent of profits will be donated to BikeWorks.

why I love where I live and work

I recently moved back to my Brandon Street home, and the following is my accounting of my gratitude in being back in the 'hood after a three-year 'sentence' in the suburbs.

I work for a Columbia City glass artist, and last week I was down in the studio attending to the details of the most recent batch of glass — shaving off stray paint with a blade, taking a diamond sander to the inevitable nicks and chips that show up along the path to the finished product. The studio is a converted garage which opens to a sidewalk, and as it's still warm, the door was ajar. I was respiratored-up, tied-into my protective apron, when two men walked by and poked their heads into the door, curious about what went on inside.
