CCBA seeks program manager

The Columbia City Business Association (CCBA) is seeking a program manager to assist the CCBA in implementing a multi-faceted business district "Action Plan". The opportunity is an 8-month-long contracted position, with the potential of continued work in subsequent years depending on funding and performance.

The Action Plan consists of some 25 strategies grouped into five topical areas: organization and outreach; business development; safety and cleanliness; marketing and promotion; and pedestrian environment. A base contract amount of $40,000 is anticipated, with the potential for an additional performance-based incentive. The program manager will work as an independent contractor.

Celebrate Saint Patrick's Day At Columbia City Theater

We're getting our best all-green get-ups ready for Saint Patrick's day and our celebratin' shoes for another great weekend of shows at Columbia City Theater. We're especially excited to present the first Round at the Theater this Saturday highlighting some of our favorite musicians, poets and painters.

We'll be celebrating Saint Patrick's Day far away from the frat boys and green beer with a night of local rock, Guinness and special corned beef sandwiches from the kitchen. It'll be all whiskey drinking on Friday night as Sunday Evening Whiskey Club and Pufferfish take the stage. And Saturday we're honored to host one of our favorite Seattle events, The Round, with some of our favorite musicians, painters and poets.

Seattle Reads: Little Bee

Seattle Reads has begun and the Columbia Branch library book club kicks off the season on Monday, March 21 at 6:45 p.m. by reading and discussing the book, Little Bee by Chris Cleave.

Little Bee tells a story of two intertwined lives and the hidden world of refugees. Little Bee, a young Nigerian, is released from a British immigration detention center where she has been held under horrific conditions for two years. She seeks out the only English person she knows: Sarah, a posh young mother and magazine editor. Eventually, what happened on a beach in Nigeria, when the two first met, is revealed. Their brief encounter, a traumatic event, has haunted each woman ever since.

Waiting For Superman

Rainier Valley Rotary Club hosts a free showing/discussion of the award-winning film Waiting For Superman at MC Electric Vehicles, 1200 S. Dearborn St, 6:30pm on March 24.

Are Our Schools Getting The Job Done?

Researchers are continually coming up with comparisons that show our kids aren't getting as good an education as kids in Singapore, France, or Poland. Are our public schools giving our kids a track on success? Are they "failure factories"?

Waiting for Superman asks troubling questions, looks at schools that don't work, and teachers who don't teach. It challenges us to ask more questions. And to discuss what we can do to improve our kids' educations.
